You really don’t understand the difference in expectations from the first attempt at a Star Wars Story versus the Skywalker saga?

Good grief, man. I know you’re a huge fan but you have zero understanding of the movie business, the box office and expectations.

Saw it this AM, loved the last 30 min. Having a 5 year old boy on your lap holding his Star Wars legos while he watched was a lot of fun. Like when he got home and said "die rebel scum!" What a great father I am.

1. Seems like the new movies don't spend as much time in space. It's Star Wars no? Too many scenes in TFA and TLJ on ground. Rogue had a ton of space scenes and space views from high above the base shield hovering above the planet.

2. Why didn't they shoot the suicide bitch when she pointed towards them? The commander even shouted in dismay. Just shoot the plane, all the guns were already pointed her direction

3. How did Luke make himself an apparition? Thought only dead Jedis can

4. Kylo Ren is always sniveling and looking half afraid....or on the verge of a cocaine withdrawal. Vader always had a calmness/rationality about him that made for a more cunning, ruthless and calculating villain.

5. Ren never flies. Vader flew his tie fighter but Ren just shows up places.

6. After the good guys fled at the end, Ren and his henchman don't discuss next steps. No teaser given

7. How did Leia float thru space and survive again? Didn't need oxygen?

8. The casino scene was surprisingly bland. Seemed like 20 unnecessary min

9. So Ghost Luke is going to haunt Ren now?

10. My kids love their Milenniam Falcon lego toy. But it sorta needs to get blown up at some point. Seems like it is needlessly indestruct Blue

11. How do you say "Falcon"? Fall-con, or Fowl-con (like the Atlanta Fowlcons)

Not many movies make 2 billion, Dane.

I think Disney will be very satisfied with their 1.5 billion and #1 movie of the year status.

It’s not hitting 1.5 and you don’t know anyone at Disney.

It was a great idea executed okay, but it's run its course. Killing off Finn would've potentially been a nice saving grace for this movie and would've streamlined things for Chapter IX. It's a perfect 'redemption story' for him to go out in a blaze of glory and save his friends. But again - the writers dropped the ball, IMO. Because Disney isn't going to kill one of their new characters.

Just another missed opportunity in a movie absolutely loaded with them.

Finn is black so he isn't going to get killed off. Abrams said the franchise needs more diversity with its audience being so global now

Non specific things I liked about this movie:

The humor - some people clearly hated it. I think it fit the tone of the series quite well. Star wars humor was generally just an Nth above pies to the face as it is. There were actually some really dry, almost laconic bits of humor throughout this. And while I think they overused the 'Hux as a slapstick rube' comic-device something awful by the end, it was damn funny early in the movie. I didn't find it distracting and by the end, as disappointment set in, it was one of the few things that gave brought me back into the movie.

Adam Driver and Ren's development - again, a lot of people dislike Driver almost as much as they dislike Kylo Ren. I think Johnson actually did a lot to dispel the emo Darth complaints of the first movie here. He gave Ren some pretty incredible character moments throughout. We got a great glimpse into his past and he assumed the mantle as the clear baddy which will pay dividends going forward and allow him to be a truly sinister figure. As for Driver - dude's main strength is emoting and it's pretty obvious why they had him destroy his mask. They wanted the audience to see his face so they could take advantage of that strength (even if it was 'scene chewing' in a lot of ways -
again, subtle acting hasn't really been a thing in the Star Wars series apart from Alec Guiness) and frankly, as a character he's coming into his own so he doesn't feel the need to emulate Vader anymore.

Um.....not much else. Some individual moments here and there were visually stunning (kamikazee sequence was mind-blowing) and certain scenes had entertainment value in their own right without being part of a greater whole, IMO (the throne room scene).

Like I said - this movie isn't objectively bad like any of the prequels. It's just not very good either. At least not in a holistic way. As a series of occasionally entertaining vignettes it wouldn't have been bad, but it just never pulled itself together into as good a move as it should have been.

Wow, I cannot disagree more. Ren was much better last movie and didn't advance as a character (or Driver as an actor) one bit here. It's sad because the character has so much potential, but comes off as a bit of a pussy. Snoke was right when he said he got beaten by a girl with no Jedi training. He smashes his helmet in response? I loved his helmet and his voice in it anyway.

What is Ren's skill? What makes him threatening? Nothing. He's clumsy and irrational.

His skill could've been building superior planes. (He has an awesome one with a great design that is NEVER utilized in these). Maybe he learned from his dad how to repair and build them, or designed a new fleet. Something

Too late!"
Starfighters can pass through the deflector shields and get close to the ship for strafing runs.

Exactly what happens in the original Star Wars with the Death Star assault.

The line you're referring to is from Return of the Jedi, when the shield was projected from the Endor Moon, and was strong enough that ships couldn't get through it.

The other line is "we've lost our BRIDGE deflector shield." So you can see why they wouldn't want a ship to crash into the bridge.

13. Why couldn't Vice Admiral Holdo just say what the plan was to Poe? That was an unnecessary silence on that which created an unneeded mission.
Do you even realize that Holdo was in the right? As soon as Poe got wind of the plan, he leaked it off the ship. Then DJ finds out. He leaks that info to the First Order. They start blowing up the transport ships that they didn't previously detect.

Holdo was right.

In general, your nitpicking is way out of line. It's a Star Wars movie. You can poke the same kinds of holes in the original films. Why didn't Vader just force choke Luke? STUPID MOVIE!!!

If you try to over-analyze these movies you're missing the point.

And yes, the First Order is led by incompetents.

They didn't expect TLJ to make MORE than TFA, which is the highest grossing Disney film of all time.

If it makes 75% I think they'll be more than satisfied. That would put it well above the #2 Disney gross of all time, The Avengers.

It's not going to generate another $500 million + at the box office.

You are confusing Star Wars with science fiction.
