Were you going to debate those points or just post a smiley?
Disney banked on bringing back Mark, Carrie and Ford. Period.

Also, as I stated earlier, Disney just RE-CAST roles in Han Solo, Lando Calrissian and even Chewie. Good grief. |

Yes, but that comparison doesn't fly, because they were re-casting for a younger Obi-Wan. And Alec Guiness WAS DEAD.
Disney was not going to make 7, 8 and 9 without the original actors. That would have been a massive gamble. Still, you might have a point. If Ford, Hamill and Fisher WERE DEAD. It's fine for them to re-cast for an anthology film now because they've already gotten through Episode 7.

The Phantom Menace featured a young Obi Wan. The role was re-cast, regardless of the fact that Alec Guiness was alive when that film was released, because the timeline was set 30 years before ANH. Secondly, the new trilogy pretty much sucks ass in regards to the OT cast. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were severely underutilized and Harrison Ford was killed off as a plot device. Lastly, the fans would most certainly have taken to a trilogy that re-cast the OT stars and as we've seen, Lucasfilm has had no qualms about re-casting Obi Wan, Han Solo, Chewie and Lando Calrissian. Hell, Tarkin was brought back to life using VFX (as was a young Carrie Fisher) and that film still made $1.056 Billion dollars. |

It was a far safer bet to include the original actors. Disney was not going to gamble their biggest move in decades on a completely unknown cast. So the Thrawn Trilogy was not on the table.

I've been a lurker on this thread for quite a while. I'm a big star wars fan, growing up watching the movies, playing star wars games, reading practically every book in the EU timeline (except those that were pre prequel movies). Reading this thread has been interesting and fascinating on the different takes people have had to this movie.
Most of my die hard star wars fan friends did not enjoy the movie. Most of my casual star wars fan friends did enjoy the movie. Why the stark difference? From a stand alone movie... it was ok (at best). If you could get past some of bad logic fails. However, from a die hard star wars fan perspective, my opinion is Disney is ruining Star Wars. Why? It seems to be a hard thing to pin down, even though that's how I feel. Bottom line it didn't feel like Star Wars to me. 1. Lack of originality. TFA... we know how that one went. Good job Disney! Way to expand the Star Wars universe and make it yours. Especially after you scrapped the EU storylines and went your own direction when there was a perfectly good trilogy with Thrawn that could have been epic! 2. They tried too hard to interject ESB and ROTJ dialogue into the writing. I caught myself numerous times during the first viewing saying really out loud. It was bordering facepalm bad in my opinion. 3. This is sort of combined with TFA...but it's been how many years since ROTJ? What happened between then and now? Why is there a First Order? What did the Rebellion become and why are they now the resistance? Not a lot (if any, maybe I missed something) touches on this. You're left wondering why we're having the same sort of overall conflict again. 4. Base on a planet, First order shows up to destroy them, fight ensues. Where have I seen that before? More unoriginality. 5. Oh look... a single x-wing taking on a dreadnaught and all it's tie fighters. Never mind the shields that should be up. Was that punch boost he did supposed to get him through shields? Or what? The purpose of that seemed odd. 6. Why are all the support Star Destroyers (which looked horrible imo - but maybe i'm too stuck with the old look) doing nothing to help stop the bombers? Let's let a dozen bombers just go right down the middle of our most important ship. 7. Bombing run... why are the bombs out of the bombers being pulled down like gravity is doing the job? I thought they were in space with no gravity? Is that planet's gravity pull that strong that high up? Unlikely. 8. The story line on tracking the ships through hyperspace was thin, at best. 9. Why are all these energy shots hitting shields, yet some small dog fighting ships can move around and blow things up on these ships with no regards to the shields? Shields got worse as the years went on in the Star Wars Universe? Anyone remember "The shields are still up. All craft pull up!" "Sir we've lost our deflector shield. Intensify forward batteries. Too late!" 10. The First Order ships shooting at the fleeing Resistance ships was baffling. You're in the middle of space, and the shots are arcing down onto the fleeing cruiser. Why do these energy shots have an arc in space like they're being pulled down by gravity? I couldn't believe that. I can suspend realism with the best of them, but that (along with the bombs) was just flat out bad. 11. Why does someone need to pilot the ship? Is there no auto pilot on these cruisers that are capable of faster than light travel? 12. Is the First Order lead by people who don't understand tactics and strategy? 13. Why couldn't Vice Admiral Holdo just say what the plan was to Poe? That was an unnecessary silence on that which created an unneeded mission. 14. How is it if Snoke knew everything that Kylo was about to do that he didn't know that he was turning the Lightsaber right next to him? That was extremely thin. And why build up Snoke only to have him killed with no backstory? 15. Since when in the Star Wars universe did hyperspace capital ships utilize fuel? In the EU series Rogue Squadron, they talk about the xwings using fuel, but stated hyperspace only sipped fuel. That's been the only mention I can recall. 16. How is it that Rose can break off the run to the cannon and turn around, then be able to catch up and smash into Fin from the side to prevent him from suiciding into the cannon? Wouldn't he already be going as fast as he possibly could? Was her ship that much faster? 17. When the resistance ship hyperspaced into Snokes ship, with Fin and Rose in shackles, why did the stormtroopers and Captain Phasma disappear suddenly upon impact, only to come marching out of the fire in perfect formation? 18. Why were the gold dice still visible (then disappear) after Luke had vanished into the force? I could keep going.... and maybe i'm nitpicking, but my god, to me, it was bad. Thanks Disney for taking a great story universe and completly ****ing it up. How bad can you make Episode 9? |

Fact is, most of the people who grew up with the EU are just not going to like the new stories. It doesn't feel like Star Wars, because this isn't the Star Wars you know. That's OK. They will be making these until the end of time. They're not targeting the existing fans. They're targeting the kids and the next generation of fans. |

There have to be some seriously strong reviews/leaks for me to purchase tickets in advance for Solo because at this point in time, it's far from a Day One viewing for me. |

TLJ is outgrossing Rogue One. In the entirety of it's release, Rogue One barely made a billion dollars. TLJ is already at 934 million.
