I 100% agree with this. I read several of the novels Zahn put out what, 20 years ago, and they were pretty damn good.

I wish they would have used concepts from EU. My main problem with the movie is just how the executed it on screen.

I think this is where I'm going to land on this movie.

Saw it again yesterday. Second time its way better. I know the WTF moments are coming and could just relax and watch the movie.

I think the main issue now is Johnson, the way he chose his shots, moved the story along, chose to portray characters. It wasn't such a bad job but as DJ said, more about missed opportunities.

On a side note:

I saw it in a "Dolby" theater the first time and in "Real" 3D the second time. I try to go see a movie in 3D every couple of years to see if the tech has moved forward. It hasn't, its still too dark.

That my main issue, if Luke is going to die let him die in person. It would have had a more emotional response. Having force projection really took the feeling out of it.

Killing Snoke, fine but let's make the impact more dramatic. Have Kylo go from being a child to a stoic badass in that scene. The concept is that Kylo had been acting like that to lure Snoke into a false sense of security. It would also make it much more believable that he could take control of the First Order.

Instead of the leader Hyper jumping through everything, have her hyper jump right in front of snoke ship and ram/self destruct...

Instead of Luke "reading" dreams of Kylo, show Kylo being over aggressive toward other student in a duel which almost kills student and Luke steps in. Kylo could have raged for Luke holding him back etc.

etc.... You can keep story the same just execute it better on screen

BTW if the feminists get pisses off by a" weakened underdog" Jedi Woman. Then in TFA they should've made Rey a badass Darkside user and Ben Solo as the underdog who's a late bloomer then "Goku's up" in the series through said hard work and determination.

Look for 'The Last Jedi' to Become 2017's Highest Grossing Release Over New Year's Frame

Quote:
Look for Star Wars: The Last Jedi to once again finish #1 for a third weekend in a row. While the latest installment in the franchise saw a slightly steeper than we expected last weekend, the fact Christmas fell on a Monday played a big factor in that three-day dip. While we expect Last Jedi to show one of the larger drops, if not the largest, in this weekend's top ten, it won't be so hefty as to push it anywhere near second place.

Right now we're looking at a drop around 18-21% and a three-day weekend around $57 million as Last Jedi will end the weekend as the highest grossing domestic release of 2017, topping Beauty and the Beast, which has held the top spot for the majority of the year.

I also believe that it would have been much more fun.

They would have needed to recast the roles to make story shortly after ROTJ but look, they've already re-cast Han Solo and Lando Calrissian (and Chewie, for that matter). Sebastian Stan would have been an easy drop-in for Hamill, leaving only the part of Leia, which could have been easily cast from such a wide range of excellent actresses working today.

But instead, Abrams and Kasdan chose to dump the past, dump any EU stories, start fresh, introduce "new" characters, which were basically clones of the original trilogy and use the past characters as a excuse to move forward.

The blame doesn't lie with Abrams or Kasdan, the blame lies with Kathleen Kennedy. She's the person that set the new Star Wars galaxy in motion and IMO, the only film so far that's "felt" like Star Wars is Rogue One.

The new trilogy is pointless.
I assume you are talking about the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. That would have worked perfectly as the third trilogy. I don't think it's set right after Jedi, it's at least 10 years or more after if I remember correctly so the same actors may have been ok. Those books had so much fun stuff - Mara Jade, clone Luke, evil Jedi clone villain, Han's armada of smuggler ships (including a star destroyer or two), Thrawn being awesome at every turn, cloaked asteroids, etc.

Those books had Luke, Han and Leia doing super athletic adventurous things.

You straight up COULDN'T film those with the classic actors.

I just really don't think Disney was going to bank on a new trilogy with unknown actors in the classic roles.

Thing is...you could still film that trilogy with re-casted, younger leads. There's nothing in TFA or TLJ that ruins that story. In fact, you can have the remnants of the Empire fleeing into the unknown regions at the end of it and that's when they find...Snoke. And Leia is pregnant with you-know-who.

This is just silly. Do you have any idea how Box Office returns work?

This film will be lucky to hit $650 million domestically and it'll likely top out between $1.2 and $1.3 billion. There isn't a chance in hell it hits $1.5 billion, especially with kids going back to school on January 2nd.

And no, Disney will not be "fine" with these returns. It'll make them second guess Rian Johnson's trilogy, Solo and the Obi Wan film.

Even scarier is that they'll likely micromanage Episode IX to the point where it's a boring and predictable film that will struggle to reach Episode VIII's box office.

Rest assured, the reaction to Episode VIII will send shockwaves across the Lucasfilm Film division and Disney. Hell, it may even affect their plans for a Live Action TV show in 2019 on Disney's new Streaming Service.

This is not a good result.
