If you have absolute shit on your offensive line (see Kansas City Chiefs) and have a chance to get a first round pick on a UDFA contract without giving up a single draft pick? Yeah, I'd guarantee that rookie a starting job. His only job is to not suck as badly as the alternative.

Collins will suffer a financial setback immediately. Undrafted free agents often are offered a signing bonus of less than $10,000 — a steep drop, even, from the $50,000-plus bonuses for seventh-round players. Also, undrafted rookies are restricted to making a maximum of $1.575 million in their first three years.

Because unlike other teams, the Chiefs aren't putting on the hard press, nor do I think that they're willing to give him a max UDFA contract (Paragraph 5) nor do I think he wants to play anywhere but the South.
Players from the Dolphins rented a G6, picked him up and tried to persuade him to sign. To a 21 year old kid, that's incredibly impressive. Hell, it's incredibly impressive to anyone. And the Chiefs won't do anything like that to land him, nor should they, IMO. |

It's no different than the Chiefs starting Eric Fisher when he clearly wasn't ready. Or any number of first round picks who start because of their draft status. There are many teams, like the Chiefs, who have a very good idea of what they have at RG and RT. And the answer isn't good.

According to a report, a paternity test showed that LSU offensive lineman La'el Collins was not the father of Brittney Mills' child. Mills was shot and killed on April 24, and Collins was questioned by investigators in Baton Rouge. Collins also passed a polygraph test.
ESPN's Josina Anderson reported that news, via Collins' representatives. NFL Network's Albert Breer, citing Baton Rouge Police Department, confirmed the results of the paternity test. Collins not being the father doesn't necessarily clear him of any wrongdoing, and the accuracy of polygraph tests have been debated for a while. The polygraph test was administered by an independent investigator in Mills' case, Anderson reported. But Collins, who has never been named a suspect in the case, continues to try to clear his name, which would mean NFL suitors would start officially lining up to sign the offensive tackle who was once considered a first-round lock. Collins didn't get drafted at all. He left the draft in Chicago to answer questions by the authorities and submit to a paternity test, and NFL teams avoided avoided drafting him because of the uncertainty. Brenton Mills, the child that was born after Mills was killed, has died as well and the New Orleans Times-Picayune said the baby's death has also been ruled a homicide. NFL teams have been proceeding slowly. There have been reports of interest from teams, rumors that NFL players have been trying to recruit Collins, and Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan said he had dinner with Collins. The Dallas Cowboys have a meeting planned with Collins, The Advocate in Baton Rouge said. The Advocate also said that "almost every" NFL team has contacted Collins. Collins has already lost millions of dollars but he can sign with a team as an undrafted free agent, presumably after he is fully cleared by Baton Rouge authorities, albeit for a lot less money than he would have made as a first-round pick. |

And to clarify, the contract itself wouldn't have to have the part about the second contract. It could be in writing without being part of the contract. Similar to what Justin Houston's agent is asking for as a provision to sign his franchise tag...they want it in writing that if he signs it before week 10, he won't get tagged again by the team next year. The league doesn't need to approve that. |

Your only condition is you have to start him over the garbage that's currently playing the position. Because of collins' versatility, you even have the option to move him on the line. If you thought he would start at RG and your RT sucks, you can bump him to RT. Yeah, I'd take that every day of the week. The alternative is you start someone who is garbage. What's the downside? |
