Open Carry

My last two trips to our little town of Branson West resulted in seeing private citizens with a pistol holstered.

I was right behind one in line at the bank and the other one came in to shoot the shit with the barber cutting my hair. The only thing holding the second guys gun in the holster was gravity, no strap.

I am pro gun and all for peoples rights, but why? Why does someone feel they need to be packing heat while running errands?

It makes me pretty uncomfortable to say the least. Is this person stable enough to packing heat? Is he or she sober? Are they worried about a jealous lover or spouse gunning them down? Is there going to be a shootout?

What is your opinion? Are we all going to have to be packing soon? Are we going to regress to 200 years ago, like the wild west?

Who vetted this person to have this weapon in public?

Absolutely nothing compared to frozenchief's story and what Bwana could tell you but reminded me of a hiking trip in Smokey Mt National Forest.

Me and some old Army buddies were hiking and I noticed my friend that lived near there (who was hosting the trip) had a bell on his backpack. So I asked him if that was a bear bell to scare off bears. We were stopped standing there talking about that and one of the other guys suddenly says, "hey is that a bear?"

We turn around and look off into the woods just about 25-30 meters or so off the trail and sure as shit there was a bear staring at us. I pull out my phone like a genius and snap a pic and as I'm taking a pic someone says "Hey look she has 2 cubs with her" as 2 cubs scurry up the tree next to her.

We all suddenly had an oh **** moment and started walking as quickly and quietly down the trail as we could without running.

Closest I ever hope to get to one. And never that close to a brown bear.

Edit: Also I guess that bell was pretty useless. Probably thought it was a dinner bell.

4 Grizzly's, 2 black bear's and a butt load of moose. Only two of the encounters were sketchy, both grizzly's. One bluff charge and one at a few yards away. I walked around a corner of a building at night and he stood up and let out a couple of huffs. I was unarmed for that one and got the hell out of there. Other than that, I just encountered them running the other direction when I was coming at them on trails, riding ATV's. One of those did stop and stand up. He was trying to process what I was. I stood up on my ATV seat to get tall, waived my arms and he took off.

If I were to take a long gun, I would use just what you do: a Marlin 45/70. Again, there's not a right or wrong answer (within reason) but just my own calculus.

Stay safe.

This gun is short, 18" barrel.
You too Frozenchief.

357 SW 8 shot revolver. Buffalo bore bear ammo.

But that is for Arkansas and only dealing with black bears.

Yep. That's what I carry when traipsing around Colorado. I never thought of bears in Arkansas. I was more worried about wild hogs when I was down that way.

I was taking out a bag of trash a year ago and was halfway down my driveway and a bear was going through our trash, 10 feet away. I think I took 3-4 steps to go 20’ back to front door. Lmao

Well, as luck would have it after years of not needing to fire a weapon, it happened this evening.

Had an armadillo rooting up the front yard, so I went after him with the BB gun and hit it several times without it even seeming to bother him. Once the BB gun needed reloaded, I came in the house and got my Glock 19.

When I came back out of the house with it, the critter was gone so I fired a couple shots at the new burn barrel to make water drain holes .

I really need to practice, but at least now it won't have water standing in it to rust it out if the lid is left off.

Pretty exciting stuff, I know.

Honestly was never that concerned about them either.

Until one night at the in laws one decided to pay me a visit when I was sitting on their deck.

I think he came to raid their trash/bird feeder.
