***Official 2024 Paris Olympics Thread***
Watching the Olympics? Post about it here.
A quick intro.... 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony: Start time, TV channel, date, live stream, key athletes and events The 2024 Olympic Games begin July 26 and will be televised on NBC through Aug. 11 It's the time once again. It's time for the best athletes in the world to come together and crown champions in their various sports. The 2024 Olympic Games are set to begin this week in Paris as the world descends upon France. While there will be some qualifying events taking place earlier in the week, things officially kick off on Friday with the Opening Ceremony. The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for Friday and feature several firsts, including being the first ceremony to be held outside of a stadium, as well as a parade of athletes held on the Seine River with boats for each national delegation. The boats will travel along a 3.7-mile stretch, passing by many iconic Parisian landmarks along the way. The ceremony will conclude with remarks from French President Emmanuel Macron. Expect another gold-filled summer for the Americans as Team USA will be represented in just about every event over the course of the Games. Some of the biggest stars are back, including gymnast Simone Biles, decorated swimmers Katie Ledecky and Caleb Dressel, as well as track athletes Noah Lyles and Sha'carri Richardson. Plus, the men's and women's basketball teams look to extend their dominant runs at the games with more gold. There will be two flag bearers for the United States when the team takes the boat down the Seine River -- LeBron James and tennis star Coco Gauff. The 2023 US Open champion was stunned by the news when it was revealed to her on Wednesday. "I never thought in a million years I would have the honour of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the opening ceremony," Gauff said in a statement. "I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is." Here's how to watch the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony and highlights from the first week of competition. Quote:

“There are several reasons for the change, including structural concerns at the stadium; the desire to avoid losing additional ticketed seating (the higher up you build the pool, the more rows of lower-bowl seats must be removed); and the fact that artistic swimming, which actually does require a depth of three meters, is at another venue.“ It’s a temporary pool built in a rugby stadium. |

Sounds like all the good stuff is on during the day. Certainly more diverse coverage.
Primetime coverage is lame. You get swimming, Mike Tirico, swimming, gymnastics, Mike Tirico, swimming, random highlight of one play in a game (won by the US of course), Mike Tirico, swimming, US National Anthem. If you like wrestling, boxing, weightlifting, judo, fencing, you're needing to take the day off to watch. |

They sent the athletes into that river knowing the E-coli level was still higher than acceptable in sections of where they were swimming. That river has been used for sewage for a couple of hundred years. It will be interesting to see if any or how many athletes get sick. |

Can we stop using major international competitions as a chance to give aging veterans their flowers? At least women’s soccer finally put their foot down by not even including Alex Morgan despite a prolific career. I get if you want taurasi on the women’s basketball roster as a sign of respect but starting her is bonkers.
It’s still stunning they didn’t invite Caitlin clark purely for the eyeballs she’d bring to the game. I have zero interest in watching this game outside of the box score. |

Same goes for Steph although not nearly as controversial. He’s looking cooked so far.

I didn't realize she was 27. ****, 20 is "old" for a gymnast. She's basically a fossil.
I'm honestly glad she's killing it this year. After the last Olympics, if she'd have faltered (even if for legit things - like being 27) there would be waaaaaaay too many people delighting in her failure. Nevermind all the world stuff she's won the last 3 years that nobody is paying attention to. I'm glad she's doing well. |

I’m not understanding why the issue of an Algerian man, boxing as a woman isn’t THE story around the world. That Italian girl took a ****ing shot to the nose and threw in the towel. In the first 45 seconds.
That is straight bullshit. |
