Alternate Reality Game 1: Chiefs

The original post is below in blue, but let's summarize it here based on the past few years.

1. If you're a new player, start with the current Chiefs roster. If you've been playing for a while you'll have your own evolved roster.

2. You can add any free agent that the Chiefs add.

3. You lose any free agent that the Chiefs lose, but only if they were on the Chiefs' roster when you began playing.

4. You can accept or reject any trade the Chiefs make as long as any Chiefs player involved is currently on your roster.

5. You do not get players that the Chiefs draft. You draft your own players, using the same draft picks that the Chiefs have.

6. You can trade down ONE time before the draft or after the draft. If you trade down before the draft, you get up to full value for your pick according to this chart: https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-V...-Rich-Hill.asp. (Note: this chart was updated in 2022.) If you trade down after the draft, the value of the picks you trade must be discounted by at least 25 percent. Any trade down must involve only the picks of one NFL team, and you cannot receive more than two picks more than you give up. (In other words, if you trade away one draft pick you cannot pick up more than three in return.) The other team's picks also must be picks that they held prior to the opening of the draft. See the examples at the bottom of the post.

6. You can trade up ONE time before the draft or after the draft. If you trade up before the draft, you get up to full value for your pick according to this chart: https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-V...-Rich-Hill.asp. (Note: this chart was updated in 2022.). If you trade up after the draft, the value of the picks you trade must be discounted by at least 15 percent. Any trade up must involve only the picks of one NFL team. The other team's picks also must be picks that they held prior to the opening of the draft.

7. By the beginning of the season, you must reduce your total roster to include only 53 players.

Original post: You can ignore this now.

Spoiler!

Added Rules and Reminders:

1. Remember that you can draft undrafted rookies, so you don't have to select only guys who were drafted.

2. Anyone can change their rookie draft selections at any time, UNTIL we reach ten days before training camp. At that point, all picks will be locked in.

3. Each team can do ONE trade of draft picks if they like, using this chart:http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...t-trade-chart/. However, if you're trading up, you have to pay 15 percent more than the stated value of the picks you're obtaining. If you're trading down, your pick's value will be discounted by 25 percent.

For example, if you want to trade up from the 20th pick in the 1st to the 10th pick, you can see from the chart that the 20th pick is worth 259 points. The 10th pick is normally 369 points, but by paying 15 percent more, it will cost you 1.15*369, or 424 points. So you would need to come up with another 165 points to make the deal (424-259)

For example, if you want to trade down from the 20th pick in the 1st and pick up the 10th pick in the 2nd, your 20th pick would normally be worth 259 points, but in this game it will be worth 25 percent less, or 194 points. The 10th pick in the 2nd is worth 142 points, so you can get 52 points back from the other team. (Remember that you cannot pick up more than two extra picks in the trade, so consider your math carefully.)

You can do only ONE draft-pick trade up and ONE draft-pick trade down, and in each case you can only trade with one other team for their own picks. (In other words, you couldn't take the 52 points in the above example from a third team.)

Here's my team. Let's see how we stack up.

QB
Mark Sanchez (Jets) - 16/16 (QB rating of 75.3)
Jimmy Clausen (Panthers) - 0/10
Brodie Croyle - 0/1

I'm okay at QB for the long term, though in the short term my young QBs aren't going to carry the team. Not sure if we're better than the real Chiefs in 2010 or not, but I like our future.

HB
Jamaal Charles 6/6 (1,467 yards, 6.4 ypc)
Jones, Thomas 10/10 (896 yards, 3.7 ypc)
C.J. Spiller. (Bills) 0/1 (He's my kick returner - 23.0 per KR, 14.6 per PR)
Jackie Battle - 0/0

Charles and Jones are getting it done, meaning that we're primarily a running team this year. I realize that Spiller didn't make a big splash as a rookie, but he was a good returner for us and I think brings versatility. He'll be an asset in the long run. Spiller makes us stronger than the real Chiefs.

FB
Tim Castille, FB 4/4
(We'll start Pope for 6 games, and start Thomas Jones at FB for 6 games.)

At fullback, we're about like the Chiefs were, but without Cox, so I'm installing Jones in there sometimes. I think it'll work. We're weaker than the real Chiefs here.

WR
Dwayne Bowe - 16/16 (1,162 yds, 16.1 ypr)
Chris Chambers, WR - 15/7 (213 yds, 9.7 ypr) - Chambers will have to step up and start 15 games)
Derrick Williams (Lions) - 1/1 (30 yds, 10.0 ypr)
11 Horne, Jeremy - 0/0

Okay, our receivers were a disaster, but so were the real Chiefs receivers. We're crippling by this year, and relying on our good TE to be a #2 receiver. We're weaker than the real Chiefs here.

TE
Tony Gonzalez (Falcons) - 16/16 (656 yds, 9.4 ypr)
Leonard Pope, TE- 6/6 as a blocker/fullback

I love Moeaki, but Gonzalez is the man, despite a statistical down year. We're strong here.

T
Branden Albert - 15/15
Ryan O'Callaghan - 1/1
Alex Boone (49ers) - 0/0

Having cut Richardson, we're going to rely on good ol' Wade Smith to fill in at tackle along with Albert. We've drafted both Boone and Bruce Campbell, but Boone's not ready yet and Campbell has been moved to guard. We're weaker than the real Chiefs

G
Brian Waters - 16/16
Lilja, Ryan - 15/15
Wade Smith - 16/1 (starting at tackle)
Bruce Campbell (Raiders) - 0/0
Duke Robinson (Panthers) - 0/0

We've got good Chiefs guards here, and had Smith as a backup until we needed him at tackle. Campbell appeared in 10 games and has hope, and we keep hoping that Robinson won't be a total bust since he was in IR all year. I think we were stronger here than the real Chiefs.

C
Wiegmann, Casey - 16/16

We were solid here, though we're a bit long in the tooth. Weaker than the real Chiefs since we had no backup (other than the versatile Wade Smith).

K
(Scrub) - 16/16

I really regret not drafting Succop. We haven't been able to find a kicker since then.

P
Dustin Colquitt - 16/16

Colquitt. Love Colquitt.

FS
Lewis, Kendrick - 10/10 - 30t, 3int, 1ff
Jarrad Page 6/1 - 12t, 2int, 0ff

We don't have McGraw, but we kept Page and presumably signed him. I think we're actually slightly better than the real Chiefs here.

SS
Reshad Jones (Dolphins) - 16/2 - 21t, 1int, 0ff

We drafted Spiller instead of Berry, so I hope he works out. Without Berry, we're using rookie Reshad Jones as our strong safety and forcing him into a starting role.

CB
Brandon Flowers 15/15 - 65t, 2int, 1ff
Brandon Carr 16/16 - 57t, 1int, 0ff
D.J. Moore (Bears) 1/0 42t, 4int, 1ff
Travis Daniels, CB - 0/0

I think we're pretty strong here, even without Arenas. D.J. Moore did fine as a nickel and Daniels was our dime. We're probably almost as good as the real Chiefs.

OLB
Rey Maualuga (Bengals) - 15/15 (75t, 1s, 2i, 0ff)
Dekoda Watson (Buccaneers) - 16/1 (30t, 0s, 0i, 0ff)
Andy Studebaker - 1/0 (28t, 2.5s, 0i, 0ff)

Note that we're running a 4-3, so Hali is on the line. At OLB we've got Maualuga, who's solid, and we pressed promising rookie Dekoda Watson into a starting role. Studebaker comes in on passing downs. We're weaker than the real Chiefs here.

ILB
Derrick Johnson 16/16 (121t, 1s, 1i, 4ff)
Demorrio Williams 0/0

Johnson was a rock for me, and Williams is a capable backup. We cut Belcher, which was a mistake, so we're weaker than the real Chiefs.

DE
Tamba Hali 16/16 (52t, 14.5s, 0i, 4ff)
Glenn Dorsey - 16/16 (69t, 2s, 0i, 0ff) starting 5 games at DT
Wallace Gilberry 5/2 (23t, 7s, 0i, 2ff)
DE Alex Carrington (Bills) 0/0

I think we're strong at DE, with a lot of depth. Hali is going to line up at RE in a pass rush role, and on the left side we'll have a combination of Dorsey (moving around on the line) and Gilberry, with Carrington as a backup.

DT
Ron Edwards - 15/15 (28t, 2s, 0i, 0ff)
Smith, Shaun - 10/10 (57t, 1s, 0i, 0ff)
Myron Pryor (Patriots) 2/2 (12t, 0.5s, 0i, 0ff)

We're strong here. We've got Edwards and Smith, with Pryor backing them up, and due to Gilberry's strong performance we were able to move Dorsey inside for 5 starts.

Overall, I think my offense would be equivalent to, or maybe slightly better than, that of the real Chiefs, depending on how you would compare Sanchez to Cassel, Gonzalez to Moeaki, and Wade Smith to Barry Richardson. We also add Spiller.

On defense, we're not as far along as the current Chiefs. Our d-line has a bit more depth, and our linebacker corps adds Maualuga, which is a plus. Our safeties are quite a bit weaker, though.

Without Succop, our kicking game isn't as good.

Overall, I don't think we would've had as good a record as the current Chiefs, but my hope is that I'm developing a strong offensive backfield.

Here's my revised final roster w/ starts:

QB
Matt Cassel - 15/15
Brodie Croyle - 1/1

I'm comfortable with my QB situation for now. Obviously I need a better backup, if not a new starter.

-------------------------------------------------

RB
Jamaal Charles - 6/6
Thomas Jones - 10/10
Jackie Battle

I can't complain about my RBs this year, but Thomas Jones seemed to hit a wall so I'll probably be looking for a compliment to JC this off season.

FB
Tim Castille - 4/4

Blah. My team mostly used a 3 WR, 1 RB set, I guess.

-------------------------------------------------

WR
Dwayne Bowe - 16/16
Chris Chambers - 7/13
Dexter McCluster - 7/11
David Reed (Ravens) - 0/8
Jeremy Horne

And the 3 WRs usually weren't all that impressive.

TE
Leonard Pope - 6
Scrub - 10
Brad Cottam (IR)

I still like Brad Cottam, but he didn't do me a damn bit of good on IR this year. I hope Scrub can run block.

-------------------------------------------------

T
Branden Albert - 15/15
Ryan O'Callaghan - 1/1
Brian Waters - 16/16

G
Ryan Lilja - 15/15
Jon Asamoah - 1/15
Kraig Urbik (Bills) - 2/2

C
Rudy Niswanger - 0/6
Matt Tennant (Saints) - 0/10

My offensive line was in tough shape this season. I had to use Brian Waters at Tackle for the whole campaign. He played 15 games at RT and one over at LT when Albert was dinged up.

I had to press rookies Asamoah and Tennant into service earlier than I'd have liked. I have hope that the two of them and Kraig Urbik will develop into a solid interior line in future years.

-------------------------------------------------

K
Ryan Succop - 16

P
Dustin Colquitt - 16

-------------------------------------------------

FS
Kendrick Lewis - 10/10
Jarrad Page (Patriots) - 1/6

SS
Eric Berry - 16/16

CB
Brandon Flowers - 15/15
Brandon Carr - 16/16
Alterraun Verner (Titans) - 12/1

My secondary is the strength of my team. Verner as nickleback is a luxury compared to my lack of depth everywhere else. I even had thoughts of trying Brandon Carr at FS while Kendrick Lewis was out.

-------------------------------------------------

OLB
Tamba Hali - 16/16
Mike Vrabel - 16/16
Andy Studebaker

ILB
Derrick Johnson - 16/16
Sean Lee (Cowboys) - 0/14
Corey Mays - 0/2
Demorrio Williams

Lee showed signs of being a pretty decent player this year. Whether he and Johnson are the final answer at ILB for us is an open question. I'll need a replacement for Vrabel this offseason one way or another.

-------------------------------------------------

DE
Glenn Dorsey - 16/16
Tyson Jackson - 3/3
Shaun Smith - 10/13
Wallace Gilberry

DT
Ron Edwards - 15/16
Tank Tyler (Panthers)
Anthony Toribio

Tank Tyler was a big disappointment, but this group of linemen did better than I originally expected.

I was pondering getting that one back up and running. I just need to find a few new owners since I had some folks drop out. Are you interested? It wouldn't take much to get it back up and running again.

My team there looks pretty decent (just looked at it) and I had a few extra draft picks coming as well in the rookie draft, if you get it back going, I'm still game for it.

Cool, I was planning to do that. All we'd have to do is include last year's rookies in the free agent draft, and I think we're fine.

I guess we need to come up with a draft order, too. Might just make it random.

Okay, starting with the formatted rosters.

First number is the number of starts on your team, 2nd number is NFL starts, and 3rd number is NFL appearances.

Adam, here's what I've got for you. Based on the revised starting rules, my questions are...

At tight end, you have to start Pope in 6 and O'Connell in 2 given their starting stats, so you need to cover 8 more games between them. Pope had 16 appearances, O'Connell 13, and Coffman 6, so if you take out their starts Pope can cover 10 add'l starts, O'Connell 11, or Coffman 6. Take your pick.

Right now you've got a scrub in at 6 games at FB. You've got enough tight end starts that you could start one of them for those six games if you want.

O'Callaghan had 11 appearances so I gave you all 11. I then gave you 5 from "scrub" but you can move someone else over if you want.

Jarrad Page only appeared in 10 games so you've got a scrub for 6. You can move Cox over if you want, assuming that this was before he was arrested.

I think your WRs are as you proposed. I can't recall as I'm typing this. Horne had 3 appearances and Briscoe had 2, while Chambers had 13, so I gave you all of Chambers' and 3 of Horne's. Let me know if you want to change.

I think all of your others are as you initially proposed.

Okay, cachiefsfan, here's what I've got for you. My questions are:

Croyle or Skelton for the one start that Cassel missed?

You want to move Wade Smith or Asamoah over to tackle to cover those scrub starts? You've got enough appearances to do so.

You can start Belcher all 16 games at ILB or give Spikes up to 8. Are you doing the Spikes thing and then Belcher gets the other 8 starts? (Spikes can't start all 16 because he has only 8 starts and you have to use up Belcher's starts before you can start Spikes again.

Your NT is such that you only have 9 starts from Thomas and Gales. However, you've got enough appearances for Gilberry that you could move Shaun Smith or Dorsey inside for a lot of starts. Maybe something like...16 DE for Dorsey, 16 DE for Gilberry, 10 NT for Smith, and 6 NT for Thomas? It'd be better than the scrub. Let me know.

patteeu, here's what I've got for you.

My questions are:

You initially talked about going 3 WRs, and I wasn't sure if that was choice or necessity. I bumped up Pope to his max of 16 and Castille to his max of 10, which meant that you had to make up 6 other starts from your WR corps. Since you had more than that, I chopped out some of the starts. Let me know if that's a reasonable assumption or if you'd rather see those WRs get more starts.

You can start O'Callaghan up to 11 games if you like, which would mean only 6 games for Waters at tackle if you want to give him some games at guard. Or you can keep it like it is.

You've got a lot of extra capacity at DE if you wanted one of those guys to move inside for a game instead of Toribio (or even some of Edwards' starts). Let me know.

And here's where I stand. Note that I include a few notes where I've got people making starts at more than one position.

I'm going with a 4-3, so I have 32 DT starts and 16 ILB starts, which is different than everybody else.

First number is the number of starts on my team, 2nd number is NFL starts, and 3rd number is NFL appearances.

Okay, so this system makes a lot of sense. At the end of the year, you note the number of NFL starts and NFL games the player appeared in (2nd and 3rd numbers after each player). In the first number, you then define how many starts they made for you.

If you don't have enough starts at a position, you can start a player up to the number of games they appeared in. But you can't start using non-starts unless you've used up all of your starts at that position.

So for example if you have the following players at a position:

Player A: 10 starts, 10 games
Player B: 3 starts, 16 games
Player C: 0 starts, 5 games
Player D: 0 starts, 2 games

You have to use the 13 starts first, and then you can use anyone else for the next 3 as long as you aren't using them for more games than they appeared in. So in the above example, you know you have

10 starts for Player A, and you can't use him any more
3 starts for Player B, and you can give him up to 13 more starts. (You only need 3, but you could also use him at another position if he can keep you from using a scrub there.)
0 starts for Player C, and you can use him for up to 5 more starts.
0 starts for Player D, and you can give him 2 starts but no more.

You would only use a scrub if you didn't have enough game appearances to cover the starting spots.

For example if you had

Player A: 6 starts, 6 games
Player B: 3 starts, 6 games
Player C: 0 starts, 1 game
Player D: 0 starts, 1 game

You'd have all players making their maximum starts (6, 6, 1, 1) and you'd have to use a scrub for the last two games, or give the starts to someone else at another position.

The bottom line rules are this:

No player can start more games than he appeared in.

You have to use all your starts at a position before you can start counting appearances as starts.

Using the codes in the posts below, the rightmost number is the number of games appeared, so you can never start the player more than that number.

Sound good? This is easy to work with and only requires looking up the games started and games played at the end of the season. Not that much work.
