*****The Patrick Mahomes Thread*****

IT ****ING HAPPENED

OP UPDATE:

Because of all the interest in this thread, I've place all of the video content of Patrick Mahomes II's college career, and draft day goodness into a single post that can be found here. Enjoy!

It was a bold prediction that Mahomes would have a bust in Canton some day, but so far his declaration is looking pretty good.

The Athletic wrote their annual piece about quarterback Tiers. Mahomes is a unanimous Tier 1, 1 of only 4 players to have that honor. While discussing Mahomes, the articles notes that in 2019, the Chiefs were 5-1 in games when they were down at least 10 points. The rest of the NFL was 32-209-1. That averages out to 1 win for every 6 losses for other teams. So KC is 5-1 when the rest of the NFL would average to 1-6.

Any player that is that good is truly spectacular. Having that player on KC after a lifetime of frustration and futility is awesome!

Normally I'm not a fan of call-out threads, but there were too many pig-headed users who were against this pick in the beginning. Some of them have admitted their ignorance and shame, and we welcome them back. Some of them, like OldSchool, refuse to apologize, and they do not deserve entry to the Kingdom of Mahomes.

Note: I'm fine if Mahomes wasn't your pre-draft #1 QB in 2017. If you preferred Deshaun at the time, whatever. But when we pulled the trigger and traded up to get our first home-grown franchise QB, you damn well better have been at the very least hopeful and excited.

I can tell you the exact moment I found out about that pick from the aghast Denver radio jocks. It was raining, hailing even on I-25 as I was driving (I had to pull off). It was a special, special feeling. It felt like a dawn of a new era.

I had ridiculous expectations for Pat. Sometimes I even wondered if my expectations, predicated on being perpetually disappointed by the Chiefs in January since the Elway era were unfair for him. He's gone on to exceed every single one.

I readily admit that I'm not a huge draft guy, and I barely knew the name Mahomes prior to our pick. But when I got the alert on my phone that told me the Chiefs had traded up through half of the first round to grab a QB, you bet your ass I was excited. When Andy Reid gets that excited about a QB, you sit up and pay attention.

Reposting from the Royals thread, looks like Pat is starting to spend some legit "rich guy" money...

I think PugsnotDrugs(?) had posted a thread saying he had a friend who was privy to the fact that the Chiefs were HUGE on Mahomes and McCaffrey. The focus on Mahomes was so specific that I paid attention to that thread more than I had with draft speculation in the past. I still thought it was BS (sorry Pugs), but the moment the Chiefs traded up I knew who they were picking (the Denver hosts were gobsmacked by the trade. They had no idea who the Chiefs were targeting. One asked why they would replace a Top 10 QB in Alex Smith with someone who had his same skillet - Watson). The other host, however, said, "I don't think Andy wants another Smith, I think he wants his Brett Favre". That host was right. I remember soaking in their shock of it all - because it finally felt like we were in the game.

That was Gruden. Both Gruden and Sean Payton thought of Mahomes as the next Favre before the draft.

I think the host I was listening to (local Denver dude) must have been quoting Gruden then.

Oh, sorry. I was just thinking of the ESPN coverage before the Chiefs pick came in and Gruden was so pumped for Andy that he did a whole thing about Mahomes and how it could go.

I remember they were definitely local because they were legitimately upset Denver didn't end up with McCaffrey.

I'm not a big dig deep draft guy either. Most of these guys are lucky if they turn into JAG's. But, Mahomes was on my radar because of my good friend Shaggy Shane. He was all over Mahomes. This is the generational QB we need etc.
