My last two trips to our little town of Branson West resulted in seeing private citizens with a pistol holstered.

I was right behind one in line at the bank and the other one came in to shoot the shit with the barber cutting my hair. The only thing holding the second guys gun in the holster was gravity, no strap.

I am pro gun and all for peoples rights, but why? Why does someone feel they need to be packing heat while running errands?

It makes me pretty uncomfortable to say the least. Is this person stable enough to packing heat? Is he or she sober? Are they worried about a jealous lover or spouse gunning them down? Is there going to be a shootout?

What is your opinion? Are we all going to have to be packing soon? Are we going to regress to 200 years ago, like the wild west?

Who vetted this person to have this weapon in public?

That's great. Have you ever tried it while somebody was trying to kill you? Might not be as smooth when you're dodging bullets and ducking for cover. Panic, fear and adrenaline tend to play hell with smooth, and a defensive shooting situation ain't like a day at the range. Again, not having to worry about an external safety is just one more thing that could save your life.

I have two 1911s. Both are beautiful, reliable, accurate and fairly expensive. And I'd never carry either one of them.

No toes stepped on. I was just being clear for those that may read it and not know. Officers have a proficiency in firearms but that doesn’t make them Doc Holiday with a pistol. Hollywood has really warped people’s perception of what police officers are capable of with a firearm.

A short response for those that don’t understand why illegally obtained guns are more often used in violent crime than legally obtained guns.

1. Criminals that commit violent crime by definition cannot legally purchase a firearm. So their only recourse is to steal a firearm or purchase it from another criminal.

2. Legally obtained firearms are purchased by law abiding citizens. Typically (not always) they have no intention of breaking the law. When they do however if the firearm is left behind or they are found in possession of it it’s easy to prove they are the owner of the firearm and therefore the prime suspect in the commission of the crime with said firearm. I don’t have the stats in front of me but I’d be willing to be the #1 crime of legally obtained firearms is justified/unjustified homicide which is still a small number in comparison the the number of unjustified homicides committed by illegally obtained firearms.

Yeah, it's hard to beat Kydex.

I like a lot of things about Kydex holsters, except for the fact that most of them aren't very comfortable (to me), and they're noisy compared to leather or some other softer material.

i tend towards hybrid holsters where the holster itself is made from Kydex, but the backer is either leather or synthetic, like Ventcore, which currently is my favorite holster brand. Gives me all the advantages of Kydex, but a lot more comfortable for all-day wear. And Ventcore holsters are machine-washable, lol.

For every day carry, I like leather, specifically 1791. Leather is a lot more comfortable than Kydex for day to day wear.

When I'm doing outdoor stuff, though, I use Kydex, specifically Gun Fighters Inc. Kenai chest holster. The gun is easily accessible, the Kydex is weather proof, and retention cannot be beat. My outdoor stuff is stuff where retention is really important: riding a snowmachine, hiking/camping, or fly fishing. Particularly with fishing, I'm concerned about slippery rocks or a deep hole in the river and me getting dunked. I want something that will hang on to my firearm and keep it where I can reach it and Kydex fits the bill. I'd carry it all the time if it were more flexible or comfortable.

Yeah, for comfort I like leather as well. Have a couple WC leather ones that are just great, if pricey. But in AZ you’re going to sweat all over your holster, and at a certain point it’s just a lot of extra trouble, so I reserve the leathers for late fall to early spring. The other 7-8 months of the year I go with things I can toss in the wash.

Also a fan of those GF Kenai chest holsters. Just ordered one for my new 10mm.

If you want something easy and simple, there's also Glocks where you don't have to worry about manual safety.

Agree w/ DA mode without safety. Just pointing out that there are quality handguns that are DAO with a safety.

I know there was a lot of hope - and lack of hope - at one point in the 10mm community that S&W would eventually come out with a 10. Glad they did whether I ever own one or not; the growth of that market continuing is important to me as I’ve fallen in love with the round.

I only got interested in the 10mm fairly recently. Was always a .357 mag/.44 mag revolver guy. It took a couple training courses, or rather my relatively poor performances during those courses, to convince me I should carry something in MT/WY that had a few extra rounds for the possibility of fast-moving/hungry/angry bears or mooses (meese? Moosi?). Also, as we all know, you just don't have to care for/maintain a poly gun like you do a revolver.

I will say that the M&P10 is fairly soft-shooting for a 10, and it comes with the extra tall sights and the gun is already set up for an optic, so they'll co-witness. I haven't run a ton of ammo through it yet, but I have run 200 rds of my reloads through it without issue, so I expect it'll be as reliable as my other M&Ps, which would be 100%.

10mm vs a Grizz: Make sure you are shooting hot juiced up hardcast rounds only, to give yourself the best chance to cause maximum damage via penetration. Most 10mm ammo is loaded so lightly, that it ends up performing closer to .40S&W. Double tap, Buffalo Boar, Underwood and Federal has a load that's pretty hot.

Buffalo Bore 180 grain in a 5" revolver averaged 1306 FPS. Underwood 165 grain averaged 1338 FPS. FWIW, Winchester 175 grain Silvertip averaged 1147 FPS, and the old Norma 200 grain load averaged 1211 FPS. Velocities in a 5" semi-auto were not significantly different.
