He's right though, even if theres a flag, why would Pat not run?

If Mahomes sees a flag and just throws it away but it's a penalty on the defense, why not still run and take the positive play? You know what the penalty is so I'm not sure why it would matter if theres a flag or not.

It might influence him potentially taking a hit or just getting enough for the first down and getting out of bounds. More info is never a bad thing to have.

I'm not going to criticize Pat for looking back. I mean, he's the MVP, the best QB in football, and he's got the trust of all his coaches. He's shown in every single game he's played in that he's not a quitter, nor does he half-ass plays.
I think, given the flow of that game, if he was checking to see if a flag was thrown before taking off on a play that wouldn't have mattered, it's fine. He's earned a lot of leeway to do what he wants to do on the field. |

You know theres a flag, but without knowing who it's on, why do anything different? |

I mean, we could go round and round all day on it. He might have seen something he thought was defensive holding and if there was a flag, it gives him a free play. The truth is though, it was a split second decision, he looked back for a half sec, saw no flag, and ran. I don't see a huge reason to question anything. Calling him into question for something like that is reaching, sort of like what Skip Bayless does nearly every day.

I don't care that he looked back, I get why he did it. I'm not trying to make a deal of it, just that even if you see a flag I think he still runs and does what he did anyway.

I absolutely think he was just nonchalantly checking if the ref noticed the hold on the o-line. The play was on third down so, even if there was a flag, Pat would have needed to pick up a first down or the Lions would have just declined the penalty and made them punt. He wasn't going to just stop running if there was a flag. He was covering for his o-line.
I think the game has just slowed down for him so much that it wasn't a problem looking back. On another play, he got hit in the facemask after he threw the ball and had turned to ref and was patting his facemask before he even hit the ground (got the flag, too, iirc). |

Yeah that's clearly by far the most likely scenario - which Pat even confirmed. Do I just need to run for the first down or should I risk my body running 30 yards?

The refs were throwing flags like crazy. Every time we were getting some traction- another flag. Mahomes probably thought they were going to get us for a hold again.
