With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

He's fast, so that's something. But he takes terrible routes and gets poor jumps off the bat. Struggles to get on base (hovering around .300 OBP) and cannot read a pitcher when he's on.

The fact that Yost is dumb enough to bat him lead-off only exacerbates my level of annoyance.

I enjoyed the few games last year when we needed one run, Country Breakfast would get a single or walk, and Dyson would come out to swipe a base. I think we won a few consecutive games last year in that exact setup.

But you can’t do that with him stumbling around the outfield as a starter. And WTF is Yost doing having him bat lead-off? Yes, you should give one of the worst bats on your team the most at-bats simply because he’s fast.

Actually, it might have been Gathwright who said that, but it doesn't matter; he and Dyson are the same exact person.

If Dyson can consistently steal a bag whenever it's needed, I could understand him occupying a roster spot. And you're right about those games last year. Dude was electric off the bench on the bases. But there was a game earlier this year (maybe a week or so ago), and with Dyson on first, he had to steal second. Had to. No questions asked. Anyway, he didn't and couldn't.

Don't remember the game, but I pronounced his ML career over at that point. Unfortunately for Royals fans, I was wrong in a literal sense--we still have to watch his worthless ass--but I think in a practical sense that I was right.

The point really is that there probably isn't one other team in MLB that would waste a spot on Joey Dyson other than our beloved Royals.

Correct. The ML roster still has some enormous and infuriating holes.

If you would have told me three years ago that Mike Aviles would be leading off for Boston, and almost being the club leader in HRs and RBIs, I would have totally not believed you. But alas . . . .

I completely understand your larger point, and you could end up being right about Dyson.

Regarding Aviles...if you told me his line would be .265/.303/.469 and he'd be leading off for Boston, I'd say that the club is terrible. And they are (at least to this point).

But Aviles is far from the worst player to come through KC. Hell, I'd gladly take him at 2B right now. I'd take that in a ****ing heartbeat.

I've been Dyson's critic thus far.

Dude's been playing a bit better.

If it were me; and as much as it pains me to say it -- I'd be batting Getz lead off and have Maier be our everyday CF'er until Cain comes back.

Regardless; either "option" makes me sick.

But…but…28 is the age pitchers typically have it all “come together”. Just look at Kyle Davies.
