The Gift was pretty good. Bateman plays a great asshole.

Those that liked Coherence should read a recent book - Dark Matter. I read it a few weeks ago and some similar concepts.

Finally got around to The Nice Guys this weekend.
A lot to recommend it, but it kind of fizzles out at the end. It's vintage Shane Black, if you like vintage Shane Black. Excellent use of violence [if you see it or are familiar with Shane, you know what I mean]. Worth a rental or watch on streaming. I can see where people called it an overlooked gem. But I can also see why it was overlooked. It's offbeat to begin with, and like I said it kind of fizzles it's promise overall. Don't take that as a severe rebuke, more of a 'aww, this could have been even more.' It has one of the funniest bits of physical comedy in the scene referenced in spoilers below. Also, has a great homage to classic physical comedy, again spoilered.
Spoiler!

TCM was doing a series of James Garner movies this weekend and I caught Hour of the Gun and The Great Escape.
Hour of the Gun was excellent. It is basically an earlier version of Tombstone. Jason Robards just kills the part of Doc Holliday. Highly recommend this one. The Great Escape was enjoyable but felt a bit overlong. Also, Steve McQueen's part felt completely shoehorned in. It was like he was in a different movie. Still, the movie made me read up on the actual escape, which was pretty interesting. |

Saw Don't Breathe on Saturday. Really a very well done suspense thriller. The tension is built throughout effectively. Also utilized some well-timed jump scares.

Has anyone seen In the Heart of the Sea? Is it worth watching? I love period ocean based movies so even if it's just some good special effects then I would give it a look.

That bathroom scene was hilarious, though. Some good acting by Gosling there. He legitimately looked frazzled. Also, "Wanna see my dick?" |
