Not really.

People just overestimate the contributions of your average 2nd and 3rd round picks.

The Chiefs have gotten more out of Hardman and Thornhill than most teams got out of the players they took instead.

Since the end of the Pioli era, there haven't really been that many true misses in the first 3 rounds.

1st rounders: Fisher, Ford, Peters, Mahomes, CEH
2nd rounders: Morse, Jones, K-Pass, Speaks, Hardman, Thornhill, Gay, Bolton, Humphrey
3rd: Kelce, Knile Davis, Phillip Gaines, Chris Conley, Steven Nelson, KeiVarae Russell, Hunt, Nnadi, DoD, Saunders, Niang

Ford was disappointing for who he wasn't but really no worse than average for a 1st round pick. Dude made a pro bowl and had 2 seasons with double digit sacks before being traded away for a 2nd. That's a fine pick. Fisher, Peters and Mahomes are also good to historically great.

Morse, Jones and amazing 2nd round picks, Creed is likely to join that list and Thornhill already would have but/for the injury. Hardman was instrumental in a championship. K-Pass got a 2nd contract in the NFL and MOST 2nd rounders don't. Speaks sucks. Gay's and Bolton are still INCs. That's one genuine bust.

Kelce is a Hall of Famer, Hunt was a great pick until he got caught kicking a drunk girl. Nnadi is a great 3rd, Niang is already a starting NFL tackle. Steven Nelson has now gotten 3 NFL contracts and made a shitload of money as a quality, if flawed, NFL corner. Conley is a similar story. Saunders is about par for a 3rd round pick at this rate - developing into a decent situational interior lineman. DoD was taken a round too early but he'll probably have a 6-8 year NFL career - that's again about par for a 3rd rounder. Russell sucked, Davis sucked, Gaines got hurt.

No, this team does not struggle on the first couple days of the draft. It's done FAR better than most, in fact.

I'm sure CEH will finish the season around 1K rushing yards. Enough to make people feel warm and cozy and shit.

But 1K rushing yards is 59 yards per game. That ain't shit.

And it's not about how much yardage you accumulated. It's about how much was left on the field. How much MORE could've been had. Which is what we're discussing.

If you're leaving too much on the field, regardless of a 1K season, you'll be replaced. Ask Alex Smith, he knows all about that.

IF your argument is going to be, "yeah, he's a 1K rusher", great, then you should be thrilled with yesterday.

But that ain't what we're talking about here.

Would you believe me if I told you it was only 7 years between the 2 eras? And 2 of them were playoff seasons.

I'd have said 10-11 years at least.

It just felt sooooo looooooong.

Man those were some miserable years.

Good post. And with veach it's been mostly late rounders which is even more impressive.

CEH runs like he's trying to make the first man miss.....he begins shifting left/right and stop starting to give him a clear advantage on the first tackler.

Listening to the great running backs when they get interviewed, one thing they always say is they NEVER even counted the first tackler. Didn't focus on them and instead had eyes for the second man in and were thinking of how they were going to beat THAT guy.
That's the advantage a great runner believes they have, that with speed and the chance to choose where they are going they have a natural advantage against the first man in to tackle to the point that guy shouldn't be able to bring them down.

CEH looks like he thinks he's got no advantage and needs to make moves to get the first guy unbalanced.

Reckon that's a fixable thing through coaching. He's got to explode initially and then use a pause to change direction to beat the next line of defenses.

He's built like a tank, should run more like Maurice Drew and take what's there as well as advantage of extra yards and open space when he catches the defenders in the wrong fit.

That injury he had last year looked so brutal. Any of us would be in the hospital in traction. It wouldn't be surprising if it's ****ing with his head somewhat.

I would still like to see how Derrick Gore's vision does with our starters.

Yep. Truly horrible. You could have told me 7 decades and I'd have thought it was reasonable. The hell of it is both those ****leheads are still in football (I think). And hell, goddamned Daboll was being lauded as God's gift to offense last year.

Football man. Think about how much fun it would be with hiring based on, you know BFOQ...

The best part is -arguably- the work Veach and company have done after the first 3 rounds, in free agency and undrafted free agency. Going back to when he was the player personnel director, scout and later as GM…

Tyreek in 5th
Sneed in 4th
Trey Smith in the 6th
LDT in 6th
Fenton in the 6th
Danna in the 5th
Deandre Baker, Mike Hughes, Jarran Reed, Butker, Wharton, Ward, etc for what amounts to free.
