Older Movies That Are Forgotten

Hate to say, in another thread about Peaky Blinders, Blacklist thread, both of which are a great series, but I get tired after a few views. Thus I needed a break.

So I surfed Netflix and found "Awakenings". One of the better Robin Williams obscure films. Not a fan of Robert De Niro, but a good flick from 1992.

I watched it a long time ago. Glad I found it again. I like historical films and a feel good or bad story.

Recommended.

What other hidden gems are out there...

We all have our preferences. This is a generic, not niche classic ala Rocky Horror Picture Show nor Monty Pythons stuff nor Casablanca.

For years it wasn't even available on blu-ray. I just checked Amazon, though, and now it is (also 4K).

And I would consider The Abyss, T2 and Jurassic Park as being the films with the biggest effects breakthroughs of the last 35 years. They all made massive digital breakthroughs.

Especially T2. I remember seeing it for the first time in the theater. When the T-1000 poured itself into the helicopter and reformed, I said to myself "They can do anything now." That was a watershed moment.

Another interest note on The Abyss - I've actually had the helmet (or one of the helmets) that Ed Harris used in the movie on my head. My buddy who deals in movie memorabilia acquired it and had it for a few weeks before flipping it. That was cool.

Very cool! I think there is a documentary out there about the making of it?

But the legend has alway been that Cameron was a dickhead and Harris and Mastrantonio don’t talk about the experience of making it. But they both gave tremendous performances.

Watched this recently again and the fact that they actually had that rat breathing liquid oxygen (and that it survived) still blows my mind.

Another mostly forgotten 80s movie is James Cameron's The Abyss. It came out between the much more successful and acclaimed Aliens and Terminator 2, but is a great film in its own right. The early CGI it employed still holds up and was the progenitor for the groundbreaking stuff in T2 and everything else that came later.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, I recommend sticking to the theatrical release. The director's cut throws in a brewing war subplot that adds absolutely nothing and detracts from the main story.

And if you ever run into Ed Harris, don't ask him about this movie. Cameron basically tried to drown him multiple times during the movie's production and he apparently had a serious problem with that.

I had nightmares when the submersible went over the edge and then the sound of glass cracking with the pop when it reached crush depth.

Was a great movie!

Thought of another random one today. “Disorganized Crime”. Good little heist movie from 1989. No huge stars, unless you count Fred Gwynne, Ed O’Neil, Lou Diamond Phillips, Corbin Bernsen or Ruben Blades as huge stars. Just a fun little movie that came and went with little to no fanfare. The chemistry with these guys is great.

Yea. I remember that. Hadnt thought about it in decades.

Just looked it up. It’s an old Disney/Touchstone movie and they have buried a lot of those titles.
