Oregon 2017 ended up not competitive but that one still haunts me. Having Mason/Graham/Jackson and pretty much only losing because Udoka got hurt at the end of the year (a new KU tradition!) was just awful. Mason was a damn badass in the first half, doing everything he could.

2013 choke job/Michigan miracle 3s hurt. But we weren't seriously going beyond the F4 with the leftovers of 2012.

Those round out a top 5 along with 2002 (Maryland, lord that KU team was loaded), 2003 (Syracuse, free throws), and 2010 (UNI, ugh). EDIT: those are not in order of ranking. 1997 was kinda before my appreciation for hoops.

Any other contenders? 2020 covid cancelation or 2004 loss in E8 OT vs Georgia Tech are biggest that come to mind.

Georgia Tech was a year where every round was 'upset alert'... Pacific as the 12 and UAB was going to run them out of the gym. I remember mostly being happy they had gotten that far.

That title was ours if we don’t piss down our leg

Not even close, both in metrics and overall talent. 2010 team has an argument for being the most talented Self team in his entire era.
It’s not even close to 08. And I’d put 2020 (no debate), 2007, 2011, 2017 ahead. You Jack off to all those 2010 dudes who had a cup of coffee in the NBA. But meh. They were punked by a shit MVC team (after struggling round 1).

Don’t forget we were even with Kentucky and Dook all 2010 and they don’t faceplant like the 2010 cowards

Nah, that Oregon team was stacked with long, athletic, switchable talented NBA players, 3 of which are still contributing with the league. That loss had everything to do with how Oregon they played (and how bad a matchup they were for KU) than anything else.

Talent wise 2010 is almost certainly better than all of them. None of those other teams had 8 NBA players on it (2020 had 3; 2007 had 7; 2008 had 7; 2011 had 6--not sure by the way how 2011 could be better than 2010 when it had the same players as 2010 just without Aldrich, Sherron, and Henry, and 2017 had 5).

And if we're talking metrics, only 2008 had a better KP efficiency margin than the 2010 team and it isn't particularly close. Citing some fluke loss to UNI that would have only happened 1 out of 10 times as some kind of evidence that 2010 was a bad team is pretty silly.

I don't remember being all that bothered by it. Looking back at the box score, Devonte really didn't show up which is kind of surprising but maybe not as surprising when you look at the guards Oregon had (Brooks, Ennis, Dorsey).

I also seem to recall Landen Lucas getting absolutely destroyed by Jordan Bell (who contributed to a championship Warriors team a while back) so maybe that isn't so surprising either.

I’m pretty sure Josh Jackson picked up a few really early fouls, which pretty much negated his impact. He was such a hot head at times, which made it even worse.

Josh is one of the top 5 best players I’ve seen in 40 years watching KU

1. Manning
2. Pierce
3. Raef
4. Gooden
5. Josh

I would agree with Manning and Pierce as 1 and 2.

I'm a little surprised Embiid doesn't get more credit. Yes he showed up raw and injuries meant he didn't play in the tourny.

But he was a dominant college player down the stretch before his health gave out.

His performance at Iowa State was insane. He completely overmatched them.

His stats weren’t too absurd in that one, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

He was clearly on a completely different level around that time.

Embiid would’ve caused a lot of problems in March if he stayed healthy.

Freshman Embiid blows freshman Josh Jackson out of the water. Before he got hurt, he was becoming a two-way monster.

He sure as hell wasn't higher than Frank Mason, who Id put at 3 on your list.

Graham is probably the most misremembered KU player. So many people think he was some consistent scoring guy, but he was actually extremely streaky and prone to really bad stretches.

That's a pretty good list. Though I might have put frank Mason in there before Josh.
