In a game the Chiefs lost by six points, Alex Smith missed three wide open TDs

And yes he had a clean pocket on the second one.

When has this happened before...against the Steelers...in a crucial game....

Spoiler!

Flame away.

I would actually blame Sorenson. Too many times when he is the deep safety he plays for a hit. Not a tackle, and not the ball. It's frustrating to watch professional football players ignore a fundamental like tackling, but especially when the result of the play is a big run, or as in this case a big pass play. If Sorenson is tracking the receiver for a tackle, or tracking the ball, then the play results in an incompletion. But he didn't do either, instead he tracked the play so he could use his shoulder to lay a hit on the receiver. And maybe that isn't always a bad play, but it was today.

I'm at my maddest at Alex Smith when he doesn't take chances. It was a bad game for him. But he's not usually that wildly inaccurate. On most games, those are completions. I'd rather that than chances he doesn't take. Alex deserves a lot of blame for losing this but I'm generally not worried about this type of Alex Smith being a regular thing. He made a few errant throws, but putting us in any position at all to win the game at all was superhuman given what we had.

But the offense can't get out of it's own way.
The Chiefs defense is lucky it didn't give up 31 points in January. Stopping teams in the red zone is not a sustainable skill. If it was, you could stop them before a three yard gain scores a TD. You don't decide to start stopping teams once they get inside the 20. Sure, you can scheme to prevent big plays, but aside from that, you're just hoping the offense doesn't execute near the goal line, and if Todd Haley wasn't a terrible OC down by the goal line, Pittsburgh would have put both games away much sooner.

Over the last 23 games it certainly appears to be with this unit.

It's literally the only thing they do really well, and the Chiefs have won a ton of games because of it.

The Chiefs have won a ton of games because you can win a ton of games in a mediocre league if you don't beat yourself. You also can't beat elite teams playing at a high level that way.

You're actually making an argument for Alex Smith right now. He is the QB version of "bend-but-don't-break".

And it is not sustainable:

"The same is true for defenses, which appear to be even more random from year to year than offenses -- correlations across the board are lower. Just 30.8 percent of a team's points allowed rank can be explained by its rank in points allowed per red zone trip. And 7.4 percent of a team's points allowed rank is explained by its rank last year. The red zone year-on-year comparison accounts for just 2.4 percent of performance. It's almost entirely random."

This is the most rational and logical approach. Did anyone expect the Chiefs to go undefeated? For as poorly as the Chiefs and Alex in particular played they managed to lose by 6 and that's with Andy Reid making the goofiest call I've ever seen at the nfl level.

That being said, ALEX HAS TO HIT Robinson. Inexcusable to throw that ball out of bounds. Anywhere In bounds and that's a td.

Through every team playing at least 4 games this season, the average points scored by a team is 21.9. Last year and the year before that the average was 22.8.

It's pretty interesting to see the defense get pigeonholed for losses when they are by the simplest definition performing at an above-average level.

Here's more:

The poster boy for all of this would be the Legion of Boom in Seattle. The Seahawks have retained many of their stars on defense, but their red zone performance has oscillated wildly. In 2013, the Seahawks allowed the league's fewest points per possession and kept up their historic dominance inside the 20, allowing the fewest points per red zone trip. In 2014, they were second in points allowed per possession ... but fell all the way to 30th in points allowed per red zone trip, maintaining their high ranking in overall performance by keeping teams from reaching the red zone. And then last year, the Seahawks were consistent as can be, finishing fourth in both points allowed per possession and points allowed per red zone trip.

At least he was running to his weak side and being chased. If this was a playoff game that last throw to Robinson might lead Smith to suicide.

This post doesn't jive with any known made up sports narrative that would allow me to sleep tonight, cannot compute.
