The Fishing Thread

Searched around & only found the video fishing & BassMasters threads, i know their are plenty of outdoorsman here, so i figured it'd be cool to draw upon the Planets vast experience in all things fishing.

I only use spincast reels & fish mostly large/smallmouth bass & cats. My choice of reels is quite the source of derision from many people i know 'duffer gear', but i haul in my share of 6 pound bass & 10-20 pound cats on that gear no problem. With a little know-how you can use just about any technique you want to on 'duffer gear'.

Berkley Powerbaits are a big part of my trick bag, the difference between those & regular stuff is night & day. My best action last summer came on Mister Twister scented white curly tail grubs, on one day fishing from shore to a bridge pier, i caught smallies, bigmouths, perch & even 1 carp believe it or not... great day. But my bread & butter is a texas rigged Berkley worm, it'll wiggle through any kind of cover without getting hung up.

With cats i strictly bottom fish, no bobber & bait is just as basic... but its always in 2's to give'em a real treat... a shrimp/with a nightcrawler, liver/chunk of cheese etc. Cats are mostly for night sport to me, time to kick back a lil...

So thats me style, how do the rest of you guys get your fish on? What do you fish for, what do you use? IIRC Missouri's trout season just kicked off, anyone getting anything?

I gotta get my fish on. Hopefully it rains this week so I can have an open fire keep warm at night with next week. Kansas has a fire ban I think still it's been dry but cold.
Oh yeah, nothing completes the fishing big picture quite like having a nice little fire going...

Caught a nice rainbow on a jerkbait at the Mountain Lake last weekend, first fish of the year, but I turned it loose. Hard to catch them up there this time of year, if I would have had a few more bites I may have tried to make a meal, but I had to work for that one fish. Still fun though.

I have two fishing days scheduled for next weekend. We fish for anything that grabs our lures. It has been probably 6-7 months.

Kind of useless to just keep one, it was keeping size, but I would have needed two or three of the same size to make a decent meal. Big Trout in that little lake though, somebody caught a 13 pounder over the Summer...

Lake gets stocked over the Summer as well, so they are a lot easier to catch on dough baits...especially after they stock it. Using dough bait they always swallow it, and Trout being somewhat delicate, you have to keep those fish or they would die otherwise. Kind of mindless fishing if you ask me, it's much more challenging catching them on lures, and you have the option of releasing them. I do eat them from time to time, they are pretty dang good.

I usually target Bass up there, and that was what I was actually going for when I landed that Rainbow, but being an Alpine lake at high elevation, the Largemouth stay relatively small, I always release those...I just like catching them.

If it warms up a bit more by the weekend, I just might have to join you guys in the great outdoors

I'm surprised the bass don't turn into monsters from feeding on the soft stocker trout. That's how those LA area lakes produce those monster bass.

I went yesterday. Skunked! Not even a bite. I can't remember the last time I got skunked. It's been years ago. It was, however, a great day. Got out of the house and on the water and did some fishing. There was a front moving in yesterday and I think that had a lot to do with it.
Oh well, I'll be back at it as soon as I can.

Lakes like Castaic and Piru produce enormous Bass, and it's true that they gorge themselves on the stocked trout. Thats how some of those big Swimbaits came into existence...they are also Florida strain Bass, which are naturally larger than the Northern Strain Largemouth. Castaic and Piru are also very large reservoirs.

Lake where we have our Cabin is a high altitude alpine lake that freezes over in the winter, so the climate is different and it's also not very big...roughly 10 acres. Also, I believe the Bass in the lake are Northern Strain, so they are naturally pre-dispositioned to be smaller. It stays fairly cold up there until early May. I've actually been on my boat, in May, fishing while it was snowing.

That said, there are some 5-6 pound bass in the lake, I've seen them caught, but I haven't caught one yet myself. Maybe about a 3 pounder at best for me. Good thing is, the lake doesn't see a lot of pressure from Bass fisherman, as it's primarily a Trout lake.

Slow bite but big bass are starting to be active. I caught a 23 inch bass yesterday on a black and blue jig with a motoroil lizard

Went into work the other day and my buddy had a 5 gallon bucket full of 7-9oz bank sinkers. Gave me a handful of em.

I feel kinda bad now. I finally caved in a deactivated my Facebook, so I'll miss out on a lot of fishing stuff this summer (until i turn into a pussy and bring it back) so now this thread is my only source of fishing talk.

After St. Patricks day and liberals bitching about people drinking irish car bombs and that being offensive, i have had enough.

People wait too long to start fishing. Pre spawn can be some of the best for all species. I have been doing great on crappie from the shore for over two weeks now. Even ran into a few nice bass though I haven’t targeted them specifically yet. After this little cold spell ends with a nice few days I will plan to get the kayak out and target those active bass.

I took home six this day but could have had way more. I left because I planned to go back with my dad and sure enough that day we took home 16. Really good size ones too. Most about 12 inches with a few 13s and only a couple under 12 inches. I love those isolated spots on the rivers above reservoirs.
