Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Conference? Not at all.

But I could truly care less about the Big XII. Honestly and earnestly. Academics are #1, and this will benefit if Mizzou is able to make the jump.

Quantify this with statistical evidence to show that college basketball generates more money than college football.

You think I give a large rat's ass about tradition when I can dump it so that the University Hospital will get millions more in research dollars on account of being in the Big 10? When the Campus will be able to upgrade its facilities across the board? When the community is able to expand and bring in businesses to develop the northern part of town around the new High School that we just broke ground on?

**** that. This would improve the Columbia community immensly. And isn't that what intercollegiate athletics is supposed to be about anyway? Sports make money for the University and provide an identity to foster longstanding loyalty. A move to the Big 10, and the money that would entail, furthers that mission at every step.

This is all sour grapes. "Tradition" is the last straw these folks have and it's nonsense. You don't put the well-being of an institution which employs thousands and is the life-blood of a fairly significant city behind "tradition".

That's gone through my mind as well. But I'm not terribly worried, obviously there is something about Lincoln that makes him want to be there, seeing that he came back after he was run out the door in '03. I think as long as the university keeps putting lots of zeroes on the end of his paycheck he will be good.
