Was at the lake getting 72 in over Friday and Saturday last weekend, and tore up my knee. Doc is 100% sure I have a significant meniscus tear, and is 50/50 on whether I have an ACL or MCL tear. MRI results should be in tomorrow. FML. |

That sucks. Did you hurt it by actually playing golf or did you have a spill somewhere? PhilFree

Hopefully your meniscus won't have to be removed, because you'll essentially be Torry Holt for the rest of your life.

How do you guys have so much time to play golf so much? I don't get it. I played everyday when I was in high school. Now I work and get home at 6. So can't really play in the week. On the weekend I have tons of shit to do around the house.

So tell me about golf clubs. Mine are from back from 1999 or something like that. I have some ping blade irons and one of those Ping Black Headed drivers that are about 300 CC. Calloway 3 and 5 wood. I thought that thing was huge now, but I guess they make them like 550 CC's now. Is this crap really that much better now?
I usually hit my driver about 280, could I increase my drives by 10 yards? |

2) Clubs go up to a maximum of 460 CCs, not 550. 3) Your driver is a Ping Tisi, which was a great driver. You could increase your drives significantly, but you'll get just as much out of the new balls. Titleist didn't start making the Pro V1s and other multilayer, elastomer covered balls that were low spin off the driver and high off the wedges until after you stopped playing. The best thing that you could do is go to Golf Digest and read their Hot List. You can also go to a forum like GolfWRX.com, but those guys are so wonky and specialized about equipment it probably won't be helpful for you for a while. If cost is a concern check out the following websites; 3balls.com Callawaygolfpreowned.com Rockbottomgolf.com Globalgolf.com and Ebay. Also, if you want to know what a fair price is for a used club, Topeka the PGA Tour Value Guide. IMO, I'd stay with your irons, they were good clubs. I had a set of i3s for almost 10 years. Now I play the i5s. As far as the drivers go, any of the drivers made in the last couple of years will give you the same performance, but you should go to a place where they can find a shaft that fits your swing characteristics. The shaft is by far the most important part of the golf club. Any other ?s, just ask.

If I can get to play golf once every week or two this year I am probably going to buy another driver. I hit a big high sweeping draw most of the time, so I kinda like my Ping driver because it's not an offset face. My golf coach used to get pissed at me because I would sell my Pro-V's for 20% off to the other teams and just use my Maxfli's. Not that I didn't like them, but hey, I wanted some beer money and those things were expensive. I used to have a Taylor Made back in the day, w/ that burner bubble shaft thing. I never noticed any difference and seemed mickey mouse to me. But alot has changed in 8-10 years. Titanium used to be the rave. I'll have to find a demo day sometime soon and check these things out. I used a Calloway EVR (or whatever the illegal driver was called) one time at a demo day and I could tell right away why it was illegal. That thing just launched whitey deep. Sometimes would pull out the Condor ball just trying to mess around w/ my friends, and if you caught those things right they would fly forever, but they never seemed to react the same way. Those things were also illegal. |

Being the dumbass I am, I not only finished the remaining 9 holes of that round, but "Tiger'd" it out for another round we had scheduled later that day. Quote:

Check out http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-equipment/hot-list for a bit of a primer on newer clubs. I have heard a lot of great things about the Titleist AP2 but I have not hit them since they are a bit over my ability on off days. Callaway x-22 tour and x-forged are other popular players irons and Mizzuno is still doing good things. You might try googleing hot list 2009 and 2008 for players irons for something to target on the used market at a better value. For players hybrids the only thing I can really suggest is either the Adams Pro or Adams Pro Gold. The Pro plays more like a traditional 2 or 3 iron but with the advantages of a hybrid and I think is still pretty popular on the tour. The Pro Gold is more forgiving and produces a slightly higher launch/trajectory but produces less of a long iron type of trajectory. My personal favorite 3 wood at the moment is the Taylor Made R7 Tour Preferred from a few years back. I have also heard good things about the more recent Burner Tour Preferred. The Titleist 906 f2/f4 is also very nice. All of them are more of the traditional size. As Hamas already said the shaft is a huge part of club selection these days. With irons not much has changed (Dynamic Gold is still one of the most popular after nearly 30 years) but with your woods you will want to find something that matches your swing. |
