50 Beers to Try Before You Die

Thought the beer snobs here might like this article (and probably critique the hell out of it).

http://www.wisdeo.com/articles/view_post/2984
(CBS) You've heard of "100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall"?

How about 50 to try before you die?!
Spoiler!

I don't know anything about lambics. This is the first Flanders red I ever tried. Bought it spur of the moment, wanting to try something new and saw it at one of my wine shops.

So as to not shock your palate by going too big too quick, stick with some other Flanders Reds or maybe a Flanders Oud Bruin, like Petrus Aged Pale, or, if you can find it locally, Odell's The Meddler. The Oud Bruins are typically not as fruity. They will be a bit more sour and will typically show a bit more oak in the flavor profile. I can usually find both of these here in Lee's Summit pretty easily.

A lot of "American Wild Ales" will also have some element of sourness, though the definition for the category is VERY broad.

My two favorites if you're going for the Flanders Red are Rodenbach Grand Cru and Cuvee Des Jacobins. You can get the Cuvee Des Jacobins around here; I've typically found it at Lukas in OP, KS, but you'll have to go to Illinois probably at the closest to find the Rodenbach (unless you order it online). They're both a bit more sour, but still very well balanced beers. *self professed sour beer nerd here*
I love the Cuvee des Jacobins. So delicious...

It's not out yet. I goofed.

I went back to the store to pick up more, and noticed at was 2012. Still tasty.

Picked up a bottle of Rye-on-Rye as well.

Pleasant surprises at Hy-Vee... hadn't seen any of these around before today.

Just finished off Sam Adams Stony Brook Red. It's pretty nice. Similar to the Dutchesse, not not quite as good.

Drinking a 2010 bottle of Boulevard Harvest Dance. That beer is tremendous fresh, and only gets worse with age, I'm discovering. Not that this bottle is bad, but the malt bill isn't gaining enough to offset the loss of Harvest Dance's brilliant hop profile.

I used to think I was a pretty heavy beer snob. I thought I was the snobbiest of the snobby beer snobs on this site. But I have to admit I don't even have the slightest idea what a Dire Fountain Starbucks Keokuk is. Not the foggiest clue.

You'll just have to step up your snobbishness in the future. Dire Fountain rules.

Found a few bottles of BCBCS in Des Moines yesterday - score. Had no luck up in the Cities. Wish I could find some Cherry Rye...

Going to make some awesome Christmas gifts for a few close friends...

Cracked into my Bourbon County Stout last night and wow. The guy at the liquor store told me it was "big" and I know exactly what he was talking about now.

While I absolutely loved the thick almost oily mouth feel and the huge richness, the "alcohol" flavor wasn't expected. I'm not a hard liquor drinker and I just found the strong notes of Bourbon to be a little much (yes Iunderstand it's aged in Bourbon barrels but still). I love every aspect of this beer except this one. I didn't expect this much bourbon flavor.

okay...now you can tell me what a dumbass I am.
