I took it as Yoda being "one with the force" and having minor control over the weather. That wasn't force lightning.

Not that much of a stretch. Served the scene well.

But this is why you have to kill the old heroes. You can only have so many characters in a movie and do them all justice. That's why Luke had to die in this one. You can't have him saving the day in Episode IX. He'll show up as a ghost, drop some knowledge and that's plenty

Poe is very clearly going to be the "Leia" character in Episode IX, and she'll probably die at the beginning.

I LOVED IT. It was everything The Force Awakens wasn't.

Everything I was going over in my head that could come off as a rip off of ESB didn't happen in this ****ing movie. A hamfisted I am your *relative* scene? Someone getting captured or frozen in carbonite? That goofy bullshit about Snoke being a force vampire? NONE OF IT HAPPENED.

This was even better than Rogue One. It was just FILLED with pure moments of Star Wars joy and emotion.

Leia using the force in a way that didn't come off as goofy, but was instead graceful and a nod to Carrie Fisher IRL? YES.

Luke talking to R2-D2 like it was 1980 again? YES.

YODA looking and ACTING like a CG version of the puppet from ESB? Lecturing Luke one last time? Frank Oz perfectly delivering lines like he stepped out of a time machine? HOLY **** I CRIED. HE HIT HIM WITH A GHOSTLY GIMER STICK.

The Falcon showing up to save the ****ing day, and then burrowing through Crait's caverns WHILE THE ****ING MUSIC FROM RETURN OF THE JEDI PLAYED? NERD BONER.

BB-8 PILOTING AN AT-ST WALKER AND ****ING SHIT UP?

LUKE DRINKING GREEN MILK?

And the climax....my god...the climax. Handled perfectly. I was feeling bummed when I heard the rumors of Luke's death, but it didn't come the way I thought it would at all. I thought he was going to show up and take out Snoke at the end, sacrificing himself in the process. This was perfect, right down to him staring into twin suns as he becomes one with the force. Totally punking that little bitch Kylo on his way out.

I was sad, and yet really happy, because Luke Skywalker was just handled so perfectly in this movie.

And Rey. Really worried when I saw that shot of her with Kylo's saber in the trailer that she was going to be way too overpowered in this. But they handled her character progression and conflict about what to do perfectly. I actually thought she was going to turn in this movie, but it would have been completely unbelievable. They really wrote her well in this movie.

I ****ing loved it.

Don't **** this up in IX, JJ.

The Force is with us.

Chewie cooking a porg and then fighting off the horrified porgs who don't want him to eat it and then finally deciding not to...pure ****ing genius. I loved Chewie in this movie.

This movie was so ****ing fun and badass and emotional and cool all at the same time. Just like the OT.

Man did I love it.

I really enjoyed the humor. Luke chucking the lightsaber, messing with Rey in the reach out/what is the force scene, Hux being a punk and getting punked by Ren.

I hope they don't come out in IX and say Rey is Kenobi or a Windu or whatever.
This felt like the second half of TFA, and I dig that. I think IX will take place sometime after TLJ, maybe years later. Resistance and First Order are more equal, I bet. This felt like Mad Max: Fury Road in some ways; long chase film.

I thought it was a very, very cool way to introduce a new force power and one that only a wise old Jedi Master would be able to pull off, obviously. At great cost to himself.

I was actually expecting him to raise his X-Wing from the water and fly off, which would have been cool, but a little unoriginal. I did expect him to show up in his X-Wing at Crait, though, which would have been a HUGE crowd pleaser. Luke in his X-Wing and Chewie in the Falcon bitchslapping TIEs? omg.

To that end, I was kinda sad R2-D2 had almost nothing to do in this movie but say hi to Luke, but I guess it's BB-8's show now.

Can anyone name for me a positive male role model in this that does not need to be helped by a female? The Disney reference here is Princesses having the power.

I mean lets go...Finn was about to get in an escape pod and get the hell out of dodge but is put on the right path by Rose. Also is saved later when he was going to stop the big weapon by Rose.

Poe is the hot shot gunner who get slapped and demoted by Leia and gets talked to about leaderships skills by Leia. He also is put in Check by Admiral Holdo or whatever her name is.

Luke?? He wants to die on a Planet and is coerced to come out by Rey and the Hologram of Leia from New Hope.

Lets flip the script a bit. Can you name any female that is a bad character in this film? Phasma Doesn't count since you don't see her out of the full armor.

Strong Female characters are good but just like the force there needs to be Balance. Such as why not Keep Admiral Akbar around to do the suicide shot into the Devastator? People know Akbar from ROTJ and the Comics. His death was wasted and this would have had more meaning and have some feeling to it. Who the hell is Admiral Holdo anyway besides a Friend of Leia's??

Other stupid crap: Why should I even give a crap about Snoke? No explanation. How did he target Ben? what was his motivations or what is he doing??? Oh who cares lets kill him off. Maybe I will have to read some stupid book to get an update on that.

Phasma was built up and is a waste.

Lukes death was I think a waste but I have heard some people drawing a comparison to Obi wan and Yoda stating that they accomplished their mission and could die in peace. Not sure I believe that but ok whatever.

Rey's Parentage. Really, she is a nobody? ok well thanks for the build up and the "secrecy" behind it. Who cares?? Maybe this will be fixed in Episode 9 where we find out Ben was lying or something.

Hope that doesn't come off as Woman bashing or whatever. I think Rey is a good character and is played really well by Daisy Ridley. Think she gained force powers a little to quickly. Also liked Leias character minus the Mary Poppins bit.

I don't think strong women's roles is necessarily a Disney influence so much as it is a societal influence. Woman, black guy, Asian girl... it's just smart to check all the boxes and avoid the headache of the inevitable bad press. I like your suggestions above though for the admirable.

I actually really liked the deal with Rey's parents. JJ may flip-flop it around in the next one though, but for me, it was refreshing and unexpected. And they way driver delivered that line was perfect. The whole movie was about things "not going the way you expect". This was true for Rey too as her whole life she'd been waiting for her family to return when the reality was far different. It was a gut punch and it was delivered perfectly.

1. Seeing Ewan McGregor as a force ghost would be a bit jarring, not to mention expensive.

2. Hayden Christensen is AIDs.

Yoda is a far more palatable option.

I think Luke just exerted himself so much projecting himself like that, that the exertion killed him. That was my take on it anyway.

As for Ren, I've heard this opinion a lot, and I whole-heartedly disagree with it. I think this is the way Hayden needed to play/portray Vadar. His temper is uncontrollable, slashing shit up all the time and force grabbing people from across the room. My least favorite scene in all of star wars is when hayden has his temper tantrum with Amidala and he throws a little cup across the room. You're darth f-ing vadar man, that shit was weak.

I think he HAD to kill Snoke to set himself up as a real villain. And it worked. He's a much less annoying character in this movie. Now he feels like a REAL villain, and what he did to Hux only drove it home.

He's going to be ****ing pissed off in IX and force-nuking people left and right.

By the end I'm guessing he destroys the First Order out of pure guilt. He's going to be a tragic hero. Just like his grandpappy.

I think you're probably most certainly right, (as she does have visions of a spaceship leaving right?) but I wouldn't mind it if it were the truth. Sometimes the strongest and most courageous among us come from nothing and those born into a strong family lineage, disappoint. That is a message I could live with.

You always surprise me Clay. I thought for sure you were going to shit all over this movie. Glad you enjoyed it. I did as well. What were your thoughts on the vegas-y scene. That was the main bit I really didn't care for.
