Hell! Bailey wouldn't have gotten this contract had Devito not gotten injured. This HC benched him too. Makes you wonder where the disconnect lies.

Great signing.

With that said, yes he gets an atta boy for THIS signing. But for the depth he has brought in, for the wise choices of who to let go and who to retain, and the draft picks who are contributing he deserves a good guy, as you put it.

The more important point is you keep pointing to Houston's $14M cap figure as if that's what you have to pay him. You don't have to. Same with Berry. You can easily significantly reduce their year 1 cap figure by delaying a roster bonus. Again, these are things I wouldn't have done this year, but in 2015 there's PLENTY of opportunities for creative contract structuring. |

Alex Smith is getting paid $4.6M this year. That tells you what you need to know. The Chiefs should have no problem keeping their guys on this team. |

Not sure why his number matters this year other than maybe a little rollover, but his number next season is $15.6M. Any rollover from him is more than ate right back up in his own increase.

I'm only pointing to Alex Smith as an example that it's easy to set up a contract with a low year 1 cap hit. There's no reason why Justin Houston should cost $14M in year 1, no matter how big his contract.

I wonder if that was sticking point to the deal?

It would have been impossible to pay for his contract otherwise.
Like the contract I'm proposing for Berry or Houston, Smith's contract has some trigger bonuses in year 2 or 3 (can't remember details). They're optional roster bonuses but they're pretty much guaranteed. It's basically a way to pay some of your signing bonus today and defer some of it later. |

Haven't read the thread yet, but will very soon.
1st of all, this is an excellent re-signing for the Chiefs, and it shows a flexibility and pragmatic approach by Dorsey that we have yet seen. The Chiefs could have stayed pat, let Bailey walk, and let DeVito come back. Instead, they've actively re-signed Bailey and will now probably actively cut DeVito. Great work by Dorsey, and a very sensible contract. 2nd, I'd like to be a child for a moment and rub this in mcaj's face, who criticized me for saying that this deal that I projected for a couple months now was unreasonably cheap: Quote:

I could certainly see where a team would not really want to give 20 +/- million and a significant salary to one player in the same season. That could be a lot of cash being payed to just one player in a single year.

It really has nothing to do with wanting to pay cash up front or not. It has everything to do with when you want that cash to hit your cap.
