-- as a child, what grocery store was the first you remember being in....? Also,

...what food-items do you remember your parents or guardian carting?

I think mine was Milgram's on Seven Hwy. across from Zarda Dairy.

Mom bought Seitz Hot-dogs and Mac-n-cheese loaf.

Also, bagged cereal. We were poor like the dickens.

Can you share your story?

Thank you.

No, but I do remember you could buy goldfish and pet supplies there.
Independence Center was built around the time I was in High School at Van Horn. But Blue Ridge Mall still did a very good business until the late 80's early 90's. Shame to see it go, especially to be replaced by a Wally World...and a suck one at that. Really poorly managed. Oh well, that's life in the big city.

We often walked to the Robandee shopping center on James A Reed & Bannister Road when I was a kid... I want to say it had an IGA, but I'm not sure. From Google Street View, there's now an Apple Market there, and the old Robandee sign is still there.

A&P in Hanover Park, Illinois. My mom would get all kinds of "extra" stuff from there based on how much money she spent. I remember her getting a full set of dishes that way. But the best memory is that is where she got a set of pictures from Apollo 11 that were my pride and joy for several years. Shots of each of the astronauts as well as about a dozen or so shots of the lander, the earth as seen from the moon, and the lunar surface.

My first memories of grocery shopping were with my mom and my siblings every Sunday morning after church in Liberty. We would visit 3 or 4 grocery stores (Milgrims, Safeway, IGA, and I don't remember the other one, maybe Krogers) every week because mom reviewed the weekly ads in the paper and knew which store had the cheapest bread, meat, etc. It seemed like a huge pain in the ass at the time. It still seems like a huge pain in the ass, but I can also admire the effort my mom went to to pinch those pennies.

We lived pretty frugally, but we always had lots of food (even though most of it was store brand stuff and whatever was on sale). Then they started buying the good stuff after my siblings and I went off to college. LOL

Before it was Service Merchandise, it was a Dolgin's (a very similar discount store), at least in the northland. I think the guy who owned it is in the jewelry business now.

Food Barn in Blue Springs off of Duncan Rd and 7Hwy. It turned into some local owned store, then IGA, then it was a ghost building for about 10-12 yrs before finally tearing the building completely down and now it's just a gravel area with a parking lot around it. And the Osco Drug is still there, though it was bought out by CVS.

I remember the live lobster tank...I always liked looking at that. I think it was in the liquor section though. Lots of booze then "oh hey.....a lobster tank".

Parents loved Strawberry Shasta soda LOL

Dad had an obsession for Cheese Curls....not Cheetos but the off-brand that came in a huge clear plastic bag. Still does to this day....doesn't go on the boat without 'em.

Mom loved Black Walnut Ice Cream.......shit tasted like chalk to me, hated that shit.

LOL Silo. I remember when Nintendos first came out my parents went to buy me one from the Silo that was across the street from Independence Center. Well, it turns out that they were sold out of Nintendos for that day. I never got a Nintendo. Thanks a lot Silo.

I had almost forgotten about Service Merchandise. I think there was one at about 91st and Metcalf. Chi Chi's was across the street - another place from my past - along with Annie's Santa Fe, were some of my first experiences with Mexican food. There was also a cafeteria in the old Metcalf South mall. It was called Putchez, or something like that. Don't remember too much about it, but did eat there as a kid.

there's something really special about Pittsburg Ks, I'm not sure what it is, but something's there, a certain spirit, a little mysterious, a certain presence.
