The fate of Chris Jones 2023 edition

Appears the Chiefs and Chris Jones are at the beginning of a contract dispute

Speculation has been that the two sides are "far apart" on a deal

So Chiefs Planet.... how do we think this will play out (poll coming)

Will the Chiefs pay up and meet Chris Jones demands? If so, how much will it end up costing?

Will the Chiefs not be able to meet Chris Jones demands and end up trading him? If so, what kind of haul can we expect?

I've really loved watching Chris Jones wreck shit for the Chiefs, it always sucks when the business side of the NFL forces teams into tough decisions.

Rightfully so. This has been my biggest concern all along. He needs to get some work in

I know "they won the SB etc" and it's worked out, but hindsight being what it is, if you can't get Jones signed and have to move on, I'd imagine they'd like to have the Tyreek thing to do over again.

No one said "We let Tyreek go so we could give Jones an extension." They may have alluded to big contracts LIKE Jones as a factor, but it's more about overall cap management. Even if we let Jones walk tomorrow, there's a whole line of dudes who are going to need contracts in the next year or two.

It's ludicrous to imply they wouldn't trade Tyreek now - ESPECIALLY in hindsight. It worked out wonderfully for the team and will continue to pay dividends in the next few years as all of the guys we got for him are on rookie contracts.

I look at it more like trading Hill instead of making him the highest paid WR "ALLOWS" Veach to have the option of resigning Jones versus having to trade him if Hill was kept and paid.

I mean if Veach sat down before Hill was traded and looked at long term cap situations like Hill and Jones. I'm sure his TOP option but maybe the most risk option would be to trade BOTH Hill and Jones for lots of cap room and picks to throw into the current roster. If Veach could do this and still win the SB DONE and DONE. Well he got his wish with the Hill trade but it seems like he isn't so sure about Jones.

I believe Veach said that last week, but I may have misheard.

I do agree that having the rookie deals is great, but having an elite player like Tyreek would also be nice if you could have traded Jones instead.

I remember seeing an episode of the Franchise I believe is where I saw it. But Veach has a team that all they do is manage the cap and make a plan for the next 3 years, so everything that's happening with Jones was already set in place. They already know who's contract will be up in 2026 and they have projected salary caps and all, so it's already been set.

The Chiefs traded Tyreek bc he was fine with a contract in the $25 million APY, then Devante Adams happened and pushed that bar from $25 million to $28 million APY which pushed Tyreek to want what he got, which was out of our cap ability.

I think they did trade Tyreek with the thought of extending Chris in mind, but just 3 months later Aaron Donald threatened to retire and got a deal far and away from any DT in the league.

I am very confident Veach was forecasting having to pay $24-27 million APY before that happened and now Donald's deal has pushed Chris to want $30 million.

Things change. Trading Chris wouldn't be a failure by any means. In fact it could be a similar situation as last year. Veach shouldn't budge on this. You can't compromise a team for one DT who is about to turn 30. The contract has to have a safety valve to protect the cap.

I agree but the problem with this could be the snowball effect in that Veach probably already has an idea of what next offseason could look like. If he has to tag Jones for $30M+ that will take up a lot of spending until he is either signed or traded. Reason why I could see Veach trade jones before the season if he gets great compensation.

That makes the most sense of anything I've read on this. If he expects to play out the year and leave he's giving away money, but if he expects to sign a new contract he theoretically can get the money back. The team isn't allowed to forgive the fines, but there's nothing to say they can't put an extra $2 million in a new contract to make it up.

PLENTY of people take stupid and ill conceived negotiating positions.

Everyone isn’t playing 5D chess. Some people are just stupid.

And the fact you’re a registered agent doesn’t necessarily mean you have the ability to negotiate a $25M contact.

The fate of Chris Jones 2023 edition

Kind of feels a little like the OBJ situation from a negotiating standpoint more than Hill, who knew the Fins would pay whatever it took to get him.

It’s possible that the relationship broke down between OBJ and the front office to the point that he felt it was worth losing money for. The wrong decision perhaps but it may have been been more personal than professional

Florio said he doesn’t expect Jones to return to the team before week 1 and I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case.

Mild. Not enough that I'll hold it against him though.
