So I've long thought about getting into bowhunting seriously and dabbled in it but I'm going to take the plunge, got a couple of nephews wanting to get into it as well so I figured now is a good time.

I'm kinda just clueless as to where to start...I'm aiming more for next year. I guess I'm just looking for some pointers or tips on where to start. Would it just be for now go ahead and purchase a bow and shoot, shoot, and shoot? Thanks.

Bow hunting is a lot like being a Chiefs fan.

A lot of waiting and waiting and waiting for something great to happen and then after a couple of years of waiting for a playoff caliber deer, you'll see it at 60 yards and something will happen to scare it off....or you'll shoot it too high and suffer the heartbreak of the wildcard loss.

My advice is 2 fold.
Shoot several bows and find what you like. join an archery club, shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot some 3d. It will help you figure range and adjust for angles etc. Target shooting, you usually know how far it is and you're always shooting with good form. I've never had that in a tree.

2nd.
Find a highly successful mentor. Talk to them, listen to them, have them show you on maps on farms where to place tree stands and explain why.

Also....don't feel like you have to get a TV deer. Fill a doe tag or whatever to get success. Enjoy the things you see from your tree and make that the focus of your hunts, not the kill.

We've been discussing our next man trip and have pretty much decided on Prairie Dogs.

Does anyone have any connections or the need for people to terminate villages of pds.

Man, I had some great prairie dog hunting back in the day. In high school, there were a few farmers that would buy me and my friends a few boxes of shells to come hunt them they were so bad. Haven't talked to any of those old timers in years though...

went down in the timber couple nights ago to clean up around one of my deer blinds. got in, sat down and went to unzip a window and something started to flop around in there with me. at first I thought it was a big-assed bug, but when I got the window all the way open a bat flew out...brrrrrrrrrrr!!!

find them every once in awhile when I open the umbrellas in the patio furniture, but they're easier to get away from outside. nasty creatures.

I’ll send my dad an e-mail and see who his contact is.
IIRC it shifts around from year to year because after a couple years of shooting the state will make the farmers poison them, which works it’ll kill off the entire prairie dog town but within a couple years they’ll be right back just as numerous as before. That’s just how fast they breed.
Oh BTW, Engineering Counterpart says be sure to take a snake charmer with you. Where ever there's prairie dogs there’s rattlers.

Didn't know that but I'll be sure to bring the Judge in case there are any snake trials.
