Unpopular Thought: Trade McDuffie

The Chiefs latest dynasty run was a direct product of the Tyreek trade. Now money is tight, draft resources are slim, and the young players from Veach's great recent drafts are getting to the age to be paid so will be leaving soon. And that's aside from the glaring need for a franchise LT.

Any chance we could get back what makes it worthwhile to give him up this offseason?

They’ve “paid the world” to try to fix this already.

Since the SB55 debacle, we’ve set a 1st, a 2nd and two 3rd’s on fire trying to fix this mess and we’re still holding our dick in our hand with no solution for LT.

The kicker is that folks want to spend another 1st rd pick on a project from a LT class that by your own admission is “not good” as if that’s not a completely awful idea void of reason.

Mahomes is 30. He isn’t young anymore. The athleticism is gonna start fading. They’re gonna have to do something aggressive to fix this mess.
He’s taken way more hits and sacks. That’s not just concerning from a mental standpoint.

This kid is going to get hurt at some point if he keeps taking so many hits and sacks. I’m actually surprised it hasn’t happened from the uptick on of pressure he’s faced.

It’s time to start sounding the alarms DJ. We’ve been patient with them for 4 years while they try to navigate this. It hasn’t worked and we’re back to square one.

It’s become that big of a crisis

The McDuffie idea may be overly aggressive, but doing the same thing that hadn’t worked and blowing more high assets on projects is the very definition of insanity.

Because what happens when THAT doesn't work. And there's, at BEST, a 50% chance that the OT you draft there becomes any sort of long-term standout.

We'll have the same people here doubling down on it. You have a thread saying "Trade whatever it takes..."

If the ONLY thing you're focusing on is one position because that one position makes your QBs job easier, and all other consequences appear immaterial, then yeah -- that's just setting PM up to be King of the Ashes.
You take that chance because you (GM) were the fool that let a real left tackle walk out of the building because you were too cheap to negotiate enough guaranteed money. So now you've got to make a trade off... Left Tackles have an 18% bust rate. If you're such a legendary talent evaluator as you claim to be than you should be able to identify a starting left tackle in the draft and he should be able to start day one. Joe Alt, JC Latham, Brandon Coleman and Olu Fashanu all had better years as rookie left tackles than any of the sad sacks that rotated through that position for the Chiefs. If I had no other choice I'd trade McDuffie. Nothings off the table now.

Who was he too cheap to get? Orlando Brown took LESS money from Cincinnati because the Chiefs "disrespected" him.

They actually played the OBJ thing right if they weren't gonna pay him. Got alot of value out of it, 2 seasons of LT play etc.

But it's an example of why once you trade for a guy like that, usually you get bent over and sign them.

Chiefs didn't feel comfortable so they didn't cave, but it's why some of us said at the time they should have just overpaid him to have the continuity of a LT.

He wanted more guaranteed money and the front-office wouldn't budge

Trading everyone instead of paying them sets a bad look. Gotta pay some of them and this is a guy you pay.

Yeah - that 1st we 'set on fire' got us 2 years of solid LT play and Nick Bolton.

The 2nd rounder was a late 2 for a kid who's one season in. Had we used a 1st on Guyton we wouldn't have Worthy and whatever else it took to trade up.

The thirds...who ****ing cares?

It's just such a wildly dishonest way of characterizing all of this.

Sure - just standing here holding our dicks. And 3 Hunts plus 2 Lombardi's.

This is absurd.

From what I've seen out of him recently they were totally right to build in an escape hatch. It's not like he's set the world on fire in Cincinnati, he's actually been low key atrocious. He wasn't even playing in half the games this year while Burrow went nuts and he's the reason Burrow missed half of 2023.

He was the worst LT in the league in pressure rate his last year here. And he wanted to be the highest-paid LT in the league. It was never going to end well.

I mean, his pressures given up dropped in a different offe... Oh wait, he gave up EVEN MORE in 2023? The guy has been on a decline since his first season in KC to the point he's not even playing half the time.

Yeah, I didn't even feel like going down the "oh, now OBJr is the savior?" rabbithole.

People HATED that guy when we had him.

I think I was one of the few that was even interested in possibly extending him. And with the money we saved by getting the job done with Smith instead of OBJ, we were able to get Tranquill, Edwards and Omenihu last season. All of whom contributed to the championship in a year where we needed all hands on deck.

I mean the revisionist history necessary to engage in this ludicrous exercise in tunnel-vision is just laughable.

They’ll sign Cam Robinson next month, even if it takes overpaying. Unfortunately he’s the best option.

People can point to Josh Conerly or Aireontae Ersery, but look like what they are: projects who may not even be able to play LT in this league.

It’s early but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we use our 1st rd pick on another offensive weapon
