I sure hope this will be good as I have loved westerns my whole life. Seems to have a good cast and Costner is pretty good at this. It will be a 2 part saga and I kind of don't like that format. We will see but America needs more Westerns!

With all of the western fans around here I am surprised this hasn't had more discussion. Oh well, it's the first night and I'm going.

First of all, it is a gorgeous film, the cinematography is wonderful and the locales are exactly what we conjure up in our minds when thinking about the the untarnished beauty of the old west, from the mesas and buttes of the southwest to the golden aspen lined mountain sides of the Wyoming territory. It is worth seeing on the big screen for that alone. As one might expect out of a four movie series, this first one is a lot of introducing these different characters at these various points around the country, either directly, or not even knowing where they are ending up, heading to a converging point with each other. Very much a set up film but, still very entertaining. One thing that Costner chose to do is instead of giving a bunch of back story to these characters we just join them in progress, knowing little to nothing about them. For example: the storyline involving the wagon train is not started off at its jumping off point in St. Louis, or Independence, going around introducing us to all of these people and their plans and reasons for heading west - we first find them in the middle of the Kansas plains with no explanation of who any of them are or what they are looking for at the end of their journey. I do not know if, even with four films, it was deemed too time consuming or, if might be an artistic approach, treating these people as representatives of the nameless, faceless masses that made the trek out west, with different individual goals but, the same ultimate hope. I have no problem with it either way, it was just something that stuck out to me. Definitely looking forward to Chapter 2 in August.

Been waiting for a good movie to come out at the theater that isn’t superhero B.S. The thing about this movie I’ve heard is you’ve gotta pay attention to the storylines or it’s easy to get lost. Will definitely go see this.

The reviews are all horrible, but that usually doesn't stop me from seeing something and it won't here, either
My problem is not wanting to go to the theater 4 different times to get the full story... I'll just wait until I can rent it, or see it on regular cable |

For the reviews to be good, it would need a separate storyline of trans cowboys making it out west.

I love Costner and I love modern movies about that time frame but I did not like it. I felt like I was leaving the theater to pee 20 times and missed the story line. I don't even know what I watched at this point. It just wasn't good. They just left out huge chunks of the story. I kept thinking I was high or something and missing it. I had to ask the wife afterwards, did I miss something? She was as confused as me.

I went and saw this yesterday. I like the way Costner paces his movies. the movie is very detail oriented but it never tells you the details outright. the locations are gorgeous but dont always match the supposed setting. like the wagon train is just starting on the Santa Fe trail (Western Mo.) and the wagons are passing by red rock mountains. WTF? The scenes taking place in Wyoming look like they are shot in Michigan.
Still, the movie was entertaining enough that I watched the entire thing. I want to watch part 1 once more before part 2. If I am still lost after seeing part 2, I probably wont bother with the rest. If I were able to advise Costner, I would tell him to take the next 3 movies and edit them into 5 movies. (or) turn the last two into 3 or 4 movies.

There is a chance that the rest of the series won’t make it to movie theaters now due to the poor reception the 1st movie has received and will be released to a streaming service.

The Postman? Costner once again bit off waaay more than he could chew, but on a whole new level than those old flops It's like he's in some pissing contest with Taylor Sheridan to see who can spread themselves the thinnest, and diminish both of them in the process Horizon as a concept just seemed doomed from the start... you want audiences to return to the theaters 4 different times to get the full story? If so you better make sure that first one is an instant Masterpiece, it better be Unforgiven part two And its clearly not that, even my mom who loves Costner went to see it last week and hated it... what the hell did I even watch/angry old lady |
