LNBS: How do you get the Best OTs?

We are all hoping that we get to see DJ Humphreys inject some juice to this OL. I think he will do exactly that and he will earn a new deal. Let’s get that out of the way.

This thread is to provide sone up to date data to discuss where the best OTs in the game were drafted. Some interesting stuff, for sure. I kinda thought I would go into this and see only high first rounders in the top 25…but that’s just not the case.

The way I posted them is for simple relevancy…
Overall NFL rank for all OTs on PFF (dodges wrenches) ….after their last name is the slot they were drafted. This is -generally speaking- the top half of the leagues OTs.

1) Mailata 233
2) Armstead 75
3) Sewell 7
4) Slater 13
5) Silverback 4
6) O’Neill 62
7) Tom 140
8) Johnson 4
9) Wirfs 13
10) Raimann 77
11) Cross 9
12) Darrisaw 23
13) Bolles 20
14) Johnson 6
15) Alt 5
16) Miller 15
17) Lucas undrafted
18) wright 10
19) Jones 168
20) Thomas 4
21 Tunsil 4
22) Decker 16
23) Jackson undrafted
24) Smith 9
25) Ekwonu 6
26) Moton 64
27) Matthews 6
28) Howard 23
29) Dawkins 63
30) McGlintchey 9
31) Moore 129
32) McKivitz 153

Some interesting things to note.

5 of the top 10 OTs were drafted at pick 62 or later.
15 of the top 32 were chosen at pick 20, or later.
12 were AFTER the first 60 picks.
7 of the top 20 were drafted at 62 or later.
Only 13 were top 10 picks.

Great now the Veach vultures are going to cackle about him being a shitty GM who can't draft.

Thanks, Boss

Maybe they’re not drafting enough guards and trying to make them tackles?

They need to go steal someone from the Packers scouting department. Those bastards take equipment mangers from Tennessee Tech and turn them into starting tackles. I’m really sick of seeing it.

I prefer to look at just LT vs just RT and when you do that, historically, most high-end LTs come from the top 20. RT, there's a mix of 1st through 3rd round. It hasn't really changed that much in a long time. Yeah, there are a couple of more statistical outliers right now than in some recent years past but it's not enough to change the status quo.

Seems like success rates would be a much more meaningful measure. There are six times as many draft picks in rounds 2-7 than in 1, so it makes sense that teams CAN find quality players later. The issue is how many busts you have to go through to find them compared to what you'd get with a high first rounder.

How will you determine success rates? You look at a guy like, say, Tevin Jenkins. Drafted in the 1st to be a LT and failed, moved to RT and failed, then finally moved to LG and became a quality starter. In the end, he's going to be seen as a quality pick because he's been a starter and his draft position was low enough in round 1 that ending up at OG isn't the end of the world. Alot more OTs get drafted later than the 1st and end up on the IOL. You'd almost have to look at "Played OT in college" vs "Playing OT in the NFL" as a measure of success. Even with that, you likely will want to gauge LT vs RT, but then you get into guys that were at LT in college and end up all-pro RTs in the league.

I need to find the source but I specifically remember hearing the Chiefs liked Troy Fautanu and were interested in him. I think it was Matt Derrick in his post draft pod.

Either way that was the best chance we’ll have in awhile. This year’s tackle class was the best in years. There were like 5 or 6 of them.

I was so convinced we were taking Tyler Guyton bc he was an insanely athletic tackle with experience. Well he’s somewhat better now but has struggled massively this year as well to the point Cowboys fans wanted him benched.

Last year there were 9 tackles taken before we took Kinglsey in round 2. Not sure if 5-6 tackles will make it to the end of round 1.

NO GM hits on every pick. I'm not gonna to give the scouts and Veach a hard time on that.

My only beef is maybe we could have traded for one but I doubt any good ones were available. I think we need to fix this before playoffs or every team will do what the Raiders and Panthers did and that will be the end of our 3-peat dreams.

This needs TOP attention in draft.

Draft needs, not in order:
OLine (2-3)
WR (1)
DB (2)
DE (1)

Chiefs really only have a few options:

1. Keep drafting OTs within reasonable striking distance of current picks. Low risk, lower likelihood of working.

2. Make a major move up. High risk, higher likelihood of success.

3. Sign a high priced FA. Some cap risk but have to ask why the guy is available.

4. Trade major draft comp to a team for an ascending player with an extension. Highest likelihood of success, but highest risk.

5. Get lucky. Low level FA turns the corner, mid-late pick homerun, someone on the roster develops. Lowest risk, lowest likelihood of success.

You also have to factor in the risk of not finding the guy. Above, “risk” really equals “price”.

If you go the low risk (price) route, you further risk injury to Mahomes and entire seasons.
