@both of you... Don't wait 18 months to get back in the saddle! While new dog is awesome and worth the wait, petless for 18 months sucks!

yep. thanks for the positive thoughts Gentlemen.
He's old, had arthritis we've been nursing along for a year, but now it's time. he has cataracts and can't see all that great. the last month or so just getting a bit worse. I can tell he doesn't even like walking, he just lays around away from everyone. Vet said this is 'denning' - basically him making a den for himself to isolate and deal with pain. Meds he was on are starting to give him the runs. I can tell that sometimes we go outside to do his business and he wanders way out and realizes "****....I gotta walk al the way back". It's just time. His quality of life is 180 from our other dog that is only 6 months younger. He's in pain and doesn't feel well, and we owe it to him for being such a great dog over the years. I'd rather make the decision a little early, rather than a little late if that makes sense. last thing I want for him to deal with is some major failure of organs or something where it's in excruciating pain etc. His pain is 'somewhat' manageable but at what cost to his quality of life, and are we only doing it so my wife and I don't have to deal with the decision. I'd rather let him go when he can still get around, albeit very slowly.

Yeah, so today sucked.
Uhhhggh. Wept like a baby multiple times today. Wife and I decided to do something to take our mid off it and tried bowling at 11am......but apparently every lane in the city was occupied. Odd, considering we bowl once every decade, literally. So we went to Dave and Busters. Holy shit, what a money suck. Oh well. $40 to take outer minds off of our dog for and hour or so. Overall, I d never go back. Lol. Like a casino playing slot machines. Didn't even bother to get a beer given the cost of everything else. Shitty day, but glad. My Oscar dog is free from pain. Was there with him when he got the shot and watched his eyes go silent. He had his blanket ad collar (he hated to be without it). Was there when his heart stopped.....I owed it to him to be there when he crossed over. 14years of a great dog. 35% of my life.

Nicoli, the English short hair is still holding his own, but is showing his age. After the passing of Cat, we have broken the two cat rule. The opportunity to adopt a 4 month female kitten and a 1 year old male seemed like the right move. So we have three cats now. There is a bit of friction between the two males, but most of the time detente prevails with minor persuasion from a super soaker on the younger male. We ensure Nicoli is given respect due to his status, age, and that this has been his safe home all his life. I'll post pics of all 3 tomorrow. |

I always hate reading these stories, and it always reminds me of the animals of my own that I've had to see pass. It sucks. My condolences. It's always hard. Hopefully tears of sorrow will pass to tears of fond remembrance sooner than later. |

I took one of the cats to the vet yesterday for a UTI, and this is the new office dog. He fancies himself the new receptionist.
