We overestimated mahomes’ confidence to deal with complete chaos. It’s not like kelce magically fixes it either. Remember mahomes’ frustration and dejected looks a few years ago when drob/hardman kept ****ing things up and all the drops that year. You could have a reliable glue guy and treat the rest of the rotation like a science lab. We will get through it because mahomes is resilient but we can’t continue to put so much on mahomes and kelce. As if mahomes doesn’t get flustered when WRs don’t do their jobs or as if we haven’t seen a younger kelce get burned out in games where he’s asked to do so damn much. |

But without that glue guy, is it ideal for mahomes to have this much rotation? This many guys making even subtly wrong route adjustments? Or how much that’s gotta **** up his timing to see Ross in one drive, then rice the next, then sometimes Toney or Watson. Not really. And it’s not like that would vulture any young wr snaps. If anything it would vulture Watson who’s biggest asset is that he doesn’t **** up - and it’s proof that just hitting your spots is sometimes good enough when you have Reid and mahomes. |

My take: I've seen what Skye Moore (or Less) can do and as Shania Twain would say, "That don't impress me much". Although I personally think Toney will bounce back from Thursday's mess he has a history of injuries and will probably miss a good amount of games again at some point. I want to see Rice and Ross in game situations. It can't be worse than what we saw Thursday night.

Ignoring the eye test in favor of a small sample of stats is a unique approach, I must say. Personally, I favor the eye test. Especially in regard to a player who’s seen limited snaps so far due to injuries and other issues. Some weird things went on in NY, and I don’t think many of us followed his Giants stint closely. But he’d been very good in KC before Thursday. Obviously the numbers don’t pop out, because he missed games and joined the team late. How many receivers with limited experience are going to join a Reid offense late in the year and get a ton of snaps? More experience in Reid’s offense will lead to more snaps, which will lead to much higher numbers. Good things happened practically every time Toney got the ball or was targeted last year, and he showed a lot of versatility. Small sample, but much larger than the 11 or whatever snaps from Thursday. But I guess you could bank on him continuing to drop every pass. The best part of this is that, while shitting on Toney’s talent, you’re also relentlessly hyping a 7th round pick who is clearly less talented and has accomplished next to nothing in this league. |

Guys, it's ONE ****ing game fer crying out loud.
New offensive tackles. No Kelce. Toney with no camp. As we've seen in the past, it sometimes can look rough when it's just a tiny bit out of synch. There's a lot of complicated, moving parts and reads made after the snap by multiple guys. The drops are inexcusable, but all 22 shows there were a lot of missed opportunities as well. Let's not panic and assume this is a representation of what this offense is going to look like this season. It's not. It's the first real live action, with a perfect storm set up to be uncomfortable in several ways. Just relax. It's going to be okay. It's going to be better next week, and we'll see people settle in to roles in this first quarter of the season. |

Look at the all-22. Ross, MVS and Watson were all open all game on deep routes.

I will say that Toney has a career 68% catch percentage on 82 targets, that is the same as Tyreke Hill, although Hill has had almost 900 targets.
Hopefully that was just a REALLY bad game for him, or he puffed a few joints before the game. |

If you want to second guess everything after one game that's your prerogative but it's not very smart. Christian Watson looked awful early last season and then became a TD machine in Green Bay. Other than the drops -and specifically the pick six gift, KC would have been good enough to beat a good opponent, with a lot of room to improve and you wouldn't be freaking out. |

From ESPN:
Here's the Chiefs' thinking on receiver Kadarius Toney, who struggled mightily Thursday night in the season opener against Detroit. When they traded for Toney at the deadline last year, they considered the move low-risk; he was in the second year of a rookie deal with major upside as a player. He helped them win a Super Bowl with some electric playmaking, and Kansas City entered the season believing Toney can be a featured player -- possibly even a No. 1-type receiver down the road. The organization sees him as a special talent. But the Chiefs weren't necessarily counting on that, especially since Toney had injury concerns coming out of New York. The Chiefs did a deep dive on him before trading for him, and they are hoping for the best but also have room to pivot. Here's guessing Toney will get more chances to find his footing after a knee injury cost him the preseason. On the receiver front, the Chiefs did look around this offseason. They kept in contact with DeAndre Hopkins before he signed with Tennessee in July. Perhaps they will look at the trade market next month, or it's possible veteran free agents Jarvis Landry and Julio Jones could help on short-term deals. |

I think the kids were thinking too much and not just playing fast and loose. You've committed to a youth movement, you don't panic after one game. |

You mean a guy missed all the training camp then struggles with timing and spacing?
I’m shocked You can’t play and be successful at football without actually practicing football a lot |

Tony Gonzalez does not agree with you. That guy hated training camp in his later years. He's like why do I need to practice this shit that I've known for over a decade and as long as he is in shape he could just show up and pwn. I don't know that I agree with him but some of the vets could get away with it. Your point remains though, Toney is not a vet and needs the reps.
