You'd hope someone on the ground would radio in and alert the planes. Just a complete failure all the way around.

Mine was a top turret gunner.

Took my daughter to the Garmin show earlier this year and we toured the 17 the was static. It was a thrill for me to take her inside of it and look around, and it's sad that there is one less 17 flying. IIRC, Liberty Belle burned up on the ground a couple of years ago. These planes are becoming scarce.

Not sure of that answer, but there were eight that were still airworthy. Seven after today, obviously.

My FIL was a Tail gunner on a B17.....
He had some stories....But always talked about
how great those planes were.

I said hopefully. But yeah. It looks bad. I don’t see any way a dude can survive that. But weird shit happens sometimes.

Up to now I hadn’t considered the possibility they could have been giving rides in the B17. That looked like a formation so hopefully not additional fatalities.

The other, a P-63 Kingcobra fighter plane, has a single pilot. No paying customers were on the aircraft, said Coates, of Commemorative Air Force, which also owned the planes. Their aircraft are flown by highly trained volunteers, often retired pilots, he said.

Alert them to what exactly? Communications are not instantaneous. They also draw your attention away from flying the aircraft.

Those aircraft were flying in proximity to one another because it was an airshow. The mistake was that one of the pilots did not fly his aircraft exactly when/where he was supposed to do. However, they were supposed to be near one another.

in some videos of the collision you can see what i can only assume is body matter splattering from the impact.

They've confirmed 6 dead now. So I assume that means 5 people were in the bomber, unless someone on the ground got struck by some debris.

Local news here said no injuries to anyone on the ground
