With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

From what I've heard, GMs are scared to go after Grienke for several reasons. 1) he doesn't want to be in a big market 2) he is a nutcase that might quit any day 3) he isn't that great of a teammate.

I think some national guy said he would be surprised if Grienke got $15 million.

Either way, the royals have been claiming that they have been saving for later. Well later is now. Bump up the payroll as promised so we have a five year window.

Contending for the division title. Would be right there, I have little.

Greinke and Hamels are the only guys on the market who are Kershaw good. Greinke is the only one the Royals have a shot at.

Adding Greinke and Garza to the rotation next year would make it look like this:

Greinke
Garza
Chen
Hochevar
Odorizzi

with Will Smith, Mazzero, Verdugo, Adcock, Teaford, etc. all lurking in the wings.

That rotation would be good enough to contend in the AL Central.

But if they only add one pitcher, they would need some good luck for that to put them over the hump (Two of the following: Odorizzi breaking onto the scene as a solid MLB pitcher from Day 1, Monty figuring it out, Lamb making a Strasbourg-like comeback and making the team out of ST, Zimmer racing through the org).

Here's the problem with trading Wil Myers... you'd have to get a stud - a true ace - that you can control for a LONG time (at least three years) to trade him.

There aren't that many of those in baseball, period. And few are available and controllable.

For a small market, dynamic everyday players are incredibly valuable.

Myers' upside is .320/30/100/100/15 with good defense in RF. That's a 4-5 WAR player, yearly.

Just aren't going to get much return that is worth giving up six years of a guy like that. Myers is a key part of the contention window. Might be easier if Hosmer were not slumping so badly.

Re: Frenchy... I certainly don't want to "live" with him in RF. He has regressed in every facet of his game (aside from smiles, leadership and buying shit for opposing fans). He was pretty awful before last season, and it looks more and more likely we just got lucky with him in 2011. Thankfully, it's only a 2-year deal.

So yes, Francouer is most likely always going to be "this bad."

On this topic... rumors on twitter the Royals are trying to move Frenchy to either Cleveland or Cincinnati. The Reds would love him. Well, at least, Dusty Baker would...
