No I don't. I do my own butchering. I usually see business cards for processors around the counter of the convenience stores that also offer check-in services.

Fair enough, Mr. PastorMikH. I'll find someone.

I'm fascinated by the concept of butchering your own deer, though. What do you do with the ... you know ... the guts and stuff.

Those stay in the field before the deer is taken to the check-in station.

Here's an article with 2 ways to field dress a deer. FWIW, I have done both methods and pesonally, IMO field dressing a deer on the ground is easier than hanging from a tree.

That's not going to work in this case, Mr. PastorMikH. About the time the beautiful and witty Mrs. FAX sees a pile of deer guts in our back lawn, the deer isn't the only thing to get field dressed.

Just take the whole thing to the locker and let them take care of it then.

I imagine that the pile of guts will be a nice addition to you touching off a 30-06 on the deck at 6:45 am while she is sound asleep.

Exactly. We would be in need of counseling after that, for sure.

Gloves? GLOVES?

What kind of pussy shit is that?

Just rip those damn things out of there.

This year I mis-judged the distance a little and shot about 2" low, basically allowing the deer to do the work for me as he ran about 50 yards, spilling guts the whole time...

On the bright side he was easy to track, and field dressing was a snap...

Gun was my trusty Savage 110 .30-06 with 165 grain Nosler Ballistic tip

Oh, and this year I decided that I would have no mercy on tree rats. On the same day I got my deer I also took home 6 nice examples, which fried up nice. My Ruger 22/45 pistol was quite the trick...

No hunting this year. My pointer died a couple years ago and now my setter has developed a bad heart mermor so he's hanging by a thread. Three time over the summer he went down in the yard and all three times I was able to heart massage him back. I thought he was gone the one day when I watched his puppydog brown eyes roll back in his head but he came back. Needless to say he really can't hunt so i'm taking a year off. Casey will hunt himself to death for me and that's the way good hunting dogs are. Between Lucky Luke and The Mighty Casey I'll never have dogs that will give me the joy (and anguish) they have.

Sorry to hear about your dogs.

I've heard of a guy locally that has 2 pointers in that age range for sale - probably $800-$1k each. If you don't haven't found a dog before the end of the season, I am planning on having my Pointer bred after season and pups will be somewhere in the $300-$400 range. My dog has EXCELENT lines, a great nose and finds lots of birds.

I always take my gloves off when I gut a deer. The innards are warm and you really don't want blood all over your gloves, it's a real pain after you've washed your hands in 35 degree water to put bloddy gloves back on.

On the gut-shot - EEEEEHHWWWW! I gut shot 1 deer - swore to myself to never do that again!

I knew a guy that liked to shoot at squirels with his '06 - he'd try to chip them with the bark of the tree by shooting a spot on the tree right by their head. He actually was a bit succesful at this though shooting a high powered rifle up into a tree doesn't sound like the safest thing to do.

Just got this e-mail from a hunting buddy.... Don't know anything else about it, but damn that's a big ol' boy..... I'll follow up with more info if I get any.

Possible new Kansas State Record Deer

I got an average-sized doe last weekend, but still trying to fill my buck tag.... I've had a couple yearling bucks in the scope, but no monsters to be seen. The weather in Kansas has the deer a little confused, and their behavior has been very unpredictable this year...

Unofficial green score on this tremendous deer is 285-3/8 gross and 269-1/8 net. Should that score hold anywhere close, it would become the second-largest deer in Kansas history. The state record, taken by Joseph H. Waters in Shawnee County in 1987, scores 280-4/8 points.
Congratulations, Gerry, on a truly fantastic Boone & Crockett trophy
