KC has gotten to the point where people think that blatant penalties against them should not be called. When they are it’s because the refs/NFL are “bailing them out”.

The issue with discussions about the Chiefs and refs are a mess because people conflate a ton of different concepts:

I don't like the rule
I don't like how they call the rule
The refs are inconsistent
The refs protect QBs too much
The Chiefs know how to use the rules in their favor
I don't like the Chiefs

All of those in some combination are usually the actual issues in these situations, but it gets reduced to "the refs are biased toward the Chiefs" because online discussion in the modern era doesn't exactly have nuance as a central characteristic.

It’s so bad people complain if the spot of the ball isn’t IMMEDIATELY correct. The officials very briefly discuss, get it right by marking it short, and they still complain the refs tried to rig it.

It starts from the head coach on down. Demeco Ryans smirking and blaming the officials indirectly in his post game presser … then the Texan players directly calling out officials.

Do the rules over protect the QB? That’s another discussion - it’s independent of this media-created, social-media fueled narrative that the Chiefs get ALL the calls.

Anyone who wants to hate-watch a NFL game and JUST look for calls they don’t agree with will find what they seek. They can then blame “rigged” games and impartial officiating for their own failures. (See Ryans and the rest of the Texans with their bad case of denial).

Where is the social media outrage that the Lions had a 3rd down “face mask” call that was a shoulder-pad grab? Must have been refs rigging the game, right?

It's time to put an end to the myth that NFL officials help the Kansas City Chiefs win football games.*

1. Referees help the Chiefs with calls: Since Patrick Mahomes took over as the starting QB in 2018, the Chiefs have been called for 846 more penalty yards, against them, than their opponents. That's the 3rd worst differential of any team in the NFL. In fact, the zebras have been making life hard for the Chiefs.

Offensive drives turn into touchdowns at a 22% pace, league wide. Since 2018, the Chiefs have been called for offensive holding 196 times. The reason that this is important is that when a team is called for an offensive penalty during that drive, the touchdown rate falls from 22% to 14%. So, not only are the Chiefs victims of the most offensive holding calls, they've managed to overcome those penalties with a top rated offense.

2. Patrick Mahomes gets a beneficial flag any time he is touched: Since 2018, Patrick Mahomes has played in 112 games and has dropped back to pass more than 4,100 times. Of those 4,100+ drop backs, there have been a total of 30 roughing the passer flags. That's 16th of any QB who's played in the NFL sine 2009. Do the math.

3. The Chiefs always get the calls in crucial situations: Be it 3rd and long or 4th and medium, those big plays when it matters most, the conspiracy theory is that the officials go out of their way to help the Chiefs in those moments. On plays of 3rd and 10 or longer, or 4th and 5 or longer, the Chiefs have just 2 penalties, for the entire season, that were in their favor. That's 15th in the NFL. Let's add to that, this little factoid. When looking at penalties in the second half, in 1 score games in 2024, no team has had more flags thrown against them than the Chiefs.

This whole narrative that the officials always help the Chiefs is just plain garbage.

* statistical data is pre-post season.

That's exactly what did it.

If you don't vote for my side all your neighbors will have the power to torture you. Everyone secretly hates you and wants what you have and to take away what you love.

That's politics - that's not reality...

It has nothing to do with reality. The fact is in modern America if you just complain loud enough long enough you'll just get what you want. Right or wrong.

It's just going to get worse because NFL refs make mistakes and anything that favors the Chiefs is going to be a "momentum changing play" whether it was reality or not. This game is the first time where it's felt like people have become disassociated from reality.
