MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

For someone who has been in the league as long as he has, he's in some pretty pathetic company there.

Connor Cook?

MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Smith is not a bad quarterback. He's not an elite quarterback. He is somewhere in the middle. Smith is what he is. The debates that echo on endlessly have truth to both sides. That is what I am tired of. Smith is mediocre and limited. He will win you games but also lose you games. A lot of Smiths wins are because of the defense or special teams. Thanks for the stability and the wins you have given us but It's time to move on. Get a guy in the draft and let smith play out this year maybe even next but let's ****ing move on.

No one gives two shits about your cherry-picked stats in a pathetic, uneducated attempt to discredit the QB. The team finished with the 3rd best record in the NFL despite half of its top 6 paid players doing close to nothing the entirety of the season.

Why the old geezers on the board can't accept this is beyond my understanding.

Looking at Smith's numbers (QBR continues to rise, completion % has risen, sack rate has dropped dramatically) and understanding most NFL quarterbacks peak heading into their mid 30's, we have more to look forward to then people realize. He can still run for the yards, but he's done a pretty solid job playing from the pocket compared to previous years. One offseason with Tyreek/conley and with Maclin getting his head straight, they are going to be a dangerous offense.

Nice post.... Yes it's time to move on. We're in year 4 with a declining offense with mediocrie QB production....

At some point you cut your losses and strive to get better.

I think the Chiefs can win with Smith it's just going to be harder to win than other teams with great QBs. People do forget that it's always the Elite QBs in this league that you have to defeat in the playoffs and it's tough to do. There is a reason these same ass hats are in these games every year. If we can be 90-95 percent healthy one of these years we can do it with Smith. That's what it will take to over come a better QB in the playoffs because smith is never going to be a Ben/Brady/Aaron. If we had a healthy Houston, Charles l and all the d we were missing man I think we have it this year.

Winning with Alex is impossible when you face a good team in the playoffs. The entire team has to be pro bowl quality for Alex to win.

Oh yeah I forgot...it was a damn talented team that Alex ****ed up by being a pussy and not throwing to wide open receivers
