Hypothetical: You, pro football, and concussions.

Imagine that you get drafted into the NFL. You complete the first year of your contract and get a concussion in your second year that causes you to miss half the season.

Your gross career earnings are about $1.3 million. Taking out the agent fees and taxes, your take-home is about $650,00 for those two years. Assume that you bought a nice condo for your mom and a sweet ride for yourself, so after that and living expenses you've got about $200,000 parked in conservative investments.

Now let's think about concussions. You've got your basic concussion stories about headaches and double vision, and you've got your more spectacular stories about Joe Phillips fleeing the law, Mike Webster living under a bridge, and that Steelers lineman blowing up in a big explosion after a police chase.

You have two more years on a contract that will pay an average of $650,000 a year.

What's the maximum risk you'll be willing to take to get that extra $650,000 a year, plus a potential future contract after that?

Assume that the risk in the poll is your odds of having a Mike Webster experience beginning at age 55.

I am a bit of a hypochondriac and if I suffered something particularly severe I'd probably take homeboy's advice and just play for 3 years to get that pension as well.

Having taken home nearly $1,000,000 in three years would be a great start to my life.

Say you put 650k in a IRA. You retire from the NFL at 25. You NFL pension kicks in at 55 as well. IRA is a 30 year one. I guess you would make what 5 million off that.

Annual IRA contribution limit is only $5.5k and 401k only $18k.

Throw that in if you are smart with what you got as a player and invested wisely you could be doing alright.

Interesting stuff on the pension.

If we assume that you're eligible at 55 and get 30 years of pension at that amount (and that it doesn't adjust for inflation), the current-day value of the pension is about $135,000. Not chump change, but it seems like the current salary might be a bigger issue.

Zero.

Nothing is worth CTE, a diminished life and a predetermined death at 55 years.

Life is full of way too many opportunities to give it up over such a small sum of money.

Honestly I would wes Welker that shit and get concussions every game. Work hard for that big money second contract. Then I'd be able to hand out 100s at the Kentucky derby

I'd play out the third year and see if I could lock up a decent second contract. If I were still looking at league minimum I would go back to farming. If I had to farm again, that $350 large will buy a tractor. No implement though.

Unless it was for the Faid or donk. **** them. I'd bomb the stadium on the way out.
