Alex Smith expresses his desire to return to Chiefs in 2018

The Kansas City Chiefs' season ended earlier than they anticipated.

The No. 4 seed in the AFC coughed up an 18-point lead in a 22-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, setting up an offseason of uncertainty.

Chief among that will be quarterback Alex Smith.

Despite leading Kansas City to a 10-6 record and AFC West title, the Chiefs are said to be open to trading the veteran pivot. The team set up its future by trading up in April's draft to select quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Smith has just one year left on his four-year, $68-million contract, and intends to see it through.

"Yeah, I mean, you kidding me? I signed the contract," Smith said when asked after the game if he'd like to stay in Kansas City, according to Nick Shook of NFL.com.

"I'm under contract for another year, so like I said, I'm not thinking about anything else. Right now, obviously disappointed. Like I said, I felt like we had a good chance, and it's gone."

Under Smith's direction, the Chiefs raced out to a 5-0 start to the season, hit a lull in which they lost six of their next seven games, then won their final four contests.

On Saturday, Smith threw two first-half touchdowns to give Kansas City a 21-3 cushion, but went 5 of 10 for 33 yards in the second half.

The 13-year veteran wasn't prepared to dive further into his future so soon after the loss.

"The game just ended," Smith said. "We'll get into all of that in the next couple of weeks."

If the refs screw Tenn on that 1st down call (off BY SIX FEET) we probably win the game. There's no way to know but we do know they don't score that drive and momentum is shifted.

In fact, with 4th and 9, I would have considered a punt from Colquitt as a better option. Pin them deep. 3 TO's left, and the 2 minute warning. Force a punt and get the ball back at midfield. Just me though.

4th and short. Then I might consider the 54 to 55 yard FG, or going for it.

Tennessee would have simply kneeled on the 50 yard line as opposed to our 15.

That 0 yard gain on 3rd and 9 was the killer... Hindsight is 20 20 but 4-5 yards from Hunt in that situation could have been the difference

I'm actually fine with having a playground QB that thinks his golden arm will save him.

If anything it will be a breath of fresh air of unpredictability that might make watching the Chiefs fun again.

Sick of watching these limited QBs follow the script to a perfect point and do nothing to adjust during the course of the gameflow. Just run the play exactly how it is and take whatever is given whether it decides the game or not oh well.

If Mahomes is anything like Russel Wilson then I am all in on that new fun. I am more than fine having Mahomes human error be the deciding factor. If you're going to lose at least do it in legendary fashion and not watch your team slowly choke it away by doing nothing, which is what we have watched from Alex Smith, Matt Cassel and everything inbetween for the last decade.

I'll take a Brett Favre on his back interception to decide the game than some clock management do nothing but watch the other team drive down your throats and suck your lead away crap. It's slow and painful. Put in the fate of someones golden arm, let that decide a Chiefs win or loss, at least that way it feels like you go down swinging.

The Titans were running roughshod over left tackle.

There is no way you punt that football.

I'm actually surprised they passed the ball so much before their last drive. That was easy money going over Lewan right at Zombo.

Let's say we got the stop at midfield going the route we did. Tennessee would have had to punt. Pins us back inside the 20 at best, maybe even back aginst the goal line. Then we have a long field to go for the FG with no TO's left.

It is what it is. FWIW, I really don't have a problem going for it on 4th and 9. The 1st-3rd down plays/execution is where it got away.

One lucky play is what killed the Cheaps... That damn self pass by Mariotta has to be one of the luckiest plays I ever seen in my life, thats the kinda shit that happens to my Raiders, Chiefs usually get the lucky breaks and deflections it seems to me

What was our record when Hunt gets 100 yards rushing?

What did Hunt average vs. a solid run D (Titans?)

What quarter does Hunt tally most of his yardage in?

And what did we do?...
