Eric Bieniemy is Available Again!

Sources: Eric Bieniemy out after one season as UCLA's offensive coordinator

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/sources...174950381.html

Nick Bromberg

Eric Bieniemy’s UCLA tenure lasted a season.

The Bruins are moving on from Bieniemy, sources told Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. The former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator and NFL running back joined UCLA’s staff in 2024 as the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach following the hire of Deshaun Foster as the team’s head coach.

UCLA went 5-7 in 2024 and was 3-6 in the Big Ten. The Bruins averaged 5.4 yards a play and scored just 18.4 points per game. Only eight teams across the top level of college football averaged fewer points than the Bruins and UCLA scored more than 20 points just twice all season.

Bieniemy, 55, interviewed multiple times for NFL head coaching positions while he was the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator. He joined Andy Reid’s staff in 2013 when Reid became the Chiefs’ head coach and was the team’s running backs coach through the 2017 season. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018 as Patrick Mahomes became the team’s starting quarterback.

However, Bieniemy never got a head coaching job in the NFL and moved on from the Chiefs after the 2022 season. Five NFL teams had job openings that offseason and he interviewed for just one.

Bieniemy became the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023, but he spent just one season with the team as the organization went through wholesale changes following the season. Washington’s new ownership group changed the coaching staff and hired Dan Quinn as the team’s head coach with former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury serving as the offensive coordinator for No. 2 overall draft pick Jayden Daniels.

Before coaching for the Chiefs, Bieniemy was the offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Colorado, for two seasons and had served as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Vikings. It’s unclear just where Bieniemy’s next coaching stop will be and it’d have been hard to fathom four years ago that Bieniemy would be leaving his third job in three seasons at the end of 2024 instead of being the head coach of an NFL team.

He's brought in guest consultants for a lot of big games. Bringing in EB in that capacity suggests that Andy is loyal and trusts his guys. Nothing more.

I don't hate EB at all, for the record.

I'm just disgusted with the hero fantasy some people have built up around the guy.

It's pretty childish.

I actually have. You have a LOT of good takes. That's why I don't give you a thumbs down for this kind of shit. I think you have a blind spot for Bienemy and that's fine. Doesn't mean you know nothing about football or anything like that.

It's all good man. I learned a long time ago to try not to get too emotional about this place. It doesn't work really and it kind of ruins the fun.

Also, I think when you look around the league at Andy's former assistants there a lot of good and bad. I think it says more about how many of them were actually THAT important I. The teams success, aka they weren't.

And finally you once again said EB is a disciplinarian. Based on what? The overwhelming amount of evidence going all the way back to CU is that he's a hard guy to get along with and doesn't always play by the rules.
Yeah but everything you say about eb can apply to Nagy. He was really bad in Chicago. But like you I see his place in KC. I don't think it's fair to judge EBs career prospects by his performance as an OC or HC roles way over his head let alone doing it for really bad teams. And I see a very big difference between lacking discipline as a high level manager versus pure on the field execution. There are lots of coaches who are shit shows in real life and total assholes who ended up being just fine when buried underneath a good coaching staff.

Apart from the eye test that we just don't play consistently disciplined football, listen to some of the testimonials from guys like Jamaal Charles and Tyreek. The message is always the same. The guy isn't some unorganized mess who yells for no good reason. Everything points to him being organized on the field, a guy who pushes lots and lots of repetition and demands perfection down to the tiniest detail on every single rep, and a guy who will rip you to shreds if you don't execute. I get that he may be unorganized in other contexts but it just doesn't hang together with how he coaches on the field. Specifically as it relates to on the field execution, yes the guy is a disciplinarian.

That's just the thing - Nagy may have been situationally bad in Chicago but that team has been to the playoffs 5 times over the last twenty years. 2 of those were under Nagy, with Mitch Trubisky at QB. He did what like 8 other coaches couldn't do in twenty years going to back to back playoff appearances. I'm not saying Nagy is great but what he did in Chicago dwarfs anything EB has ever done outside of KC.

As for Tyreek's comments about it, meh. The dude also said the Chiefs were dumb for not getting him more touches. That would be the OCs fault, would it not? It's a direct criticism of the offensive staff, to include Bienemy. Given all the shit Tyreek has said since he left, I don't think he's a trustworthy source for anything. To be honest, I'd give Bienemy the benefit of the doubt before I took Tyreek at his word.

Again, I think EB's resume speaks for itself. There's a reason he's never gotten a real shot and it's not because he's black.

And just to further dispel the idea that he's being discriminated against because of his race:

If this were racism, the issue would be that he's getting Rooney Rule interviews but never getting a job.

As it is, he's not even getting Rooney Rule interviews. It 100% points to there being issue(s) outside of his skin color.

Mahomes has praised EB and defended him several times as well. Clearly players from the Chiefs value his coaching.

Just because he hasn't worked out in other places, doesn't mean he wasn't a good fit here.

I think the objective questions to ask are:
- Look at 3 data points: Chiefs OC 2018-2022 vs. Commandos OC 2023 vs. UCA 2024
- Offense rank: 3, 5, 1, 3, 1, 29, 109 (out of 131)
- Who was QB: Mahomes, Sam Howell, Ethan Garbers (4th year with UCLA - ok good?)
- Who called the plays: Andy, EB, EB
Evidence from the Chiefs tenure is inconclusive because he didn’t call plays, Andy did, and he had a top-3 GOAT QB
When EB did call plays, how did he do? Did he get more out of the talent he had or not? Nobody could claim Sam Howell is a great QB and frankly I have no idea whether the UCLA QB is good or not.
Another good comparison is WAS 2022 (pre-EB) and 2023 (with EB): Offense ranked 20th -> 29th with EB
It’s just very hard to make the case that EB is an effective OC when you see how EB did do when calling plays at WAS and UCLA. WAS got worse, UCLA got worse. Limited data set but his performance at those two stops were terrible.

Okay, so who has Patrick come out and destroyed?

Nobody.

Not dumbass Kadarius Toney, nor Worthless Wanya Morris, and not annoying as **** Eric Bieniemy.

It's all a refusal to air dirty laundry and hamper their ability to eventually go elsewhere.
