Mahomes is 14-3 in the postseason.
He’s only come up small 1 time (AFCCG against the Bengals) in 17 postseason games. That’s it. Win on Sunday and he’ll have as many rings as he does postseason losses. We’ve never seen anything like this guy. Brady didn’t have a passer rating above 100 in a postseason game until his 6th game. Only 5 of Mahomes’s 17 postseason games have had passer ratings lower than 100.

Very excited to hear about Kittle's "blocking" after he puts up 40 yards in a loss while Kelce puts up his usual 100 and a TD in the win.

Gods, he really is a shrimp, isn’t he? Mahomes is 6-2. What’s Purdy, 5-9? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have a high level of concern with Kittles blocking...49ers run a ton of two back sets and the chiefs didn't bode well against that formation this year. The only way Ratboy win's this game is if Kittle blocks and that SF offensive line can get the running game moving and they hit on play action.

Maybe you can be the first franchise to hand him a defeat.

What's even crazier, and I wish some talking head would talk about this, but Mahomes has played 17 playoff games, and only has a single (1) loss in regulation, and that was in the SB.

The craziest thing is his comeback win rate. He is 8-2 when trailing by 7+ points in the Playoffs. Joe Montana was 4-6 in the same situation. Same sample size of 10 games, but a massive gap in performance. 80% win rate compared to 40% win rate. And that is a comparison with a guy who was considered a super clutch GOAT level player.

Excerpts from today's Athletic article by Ted Nguyen:
The Chiefs’ lack of return on their investments manifested as they had their worst offensive season in the Mahomes era. Their defense has played at an elite level, but many doubted the Chiefs as a legitimate title contender because of their lack of punch on offense. We should have known that Reid and Mahomes would find a way. Despite their flaws, they’ve improved offensively during their playoff run. Their EPA per snap in the regular season was minus-0.02 (ranked 11th). In the playoffs, despite playing against the best defense in the league (Ravens) in one of their three playoff games, their EPA per play increased to 0.07, which would put them in the top three in regular-season rankings. Some of the changes made offensively were necessitated by the weather. They played one of the coldest games in history against the Dolphins, played in another cold-weather game against the Bills the following week, and in the rain in Baltimore. In the playoffs, they increased their usage of multiple tight end sets by 9.5 percent and decreased their Cook Index by 5.5 percent, meaning they are running the ball more in neutral situations. The 49ers defense has trended in the opposite direction during the playoffs. In the regular season, their defensive EPA per play ranked 12th in the league (0.05) and their points allowed per drive ranked eighth (1.67). In their two playoff games, their defensive EPA per play was minus-0.10 and they allowed 2.6 points per drive. Those two figures would finish below the Cardinals, who ranked bottom of the league in both, in the regular season. However, the 49ers have plenty of playmakers including Nick Bosa and Fred Warner. Two games is a small sample and they’ve been a borderline top-10 unit in most metrics during the regular season. Their playoff output doesn’t accurately reflect the quality of their overall defense but it does show that they have some glaring weaknesses. Some of those weaknesses coincide with what the Chiefs are excelling at right now. The 49ers are struggling against multiple tight end sets and trying to defend the run. The 49ers’ inability to defend the run was evident in the regular season, but it’s been exacerbated in the playoffs. In the regular season, they ranked 27th in defensive rushing success rate (58.8 percent). In the playoffs, their defensive success rate dropped to 49.1 percent. The 49ers are a single-gap attacking defense. Their defensive line is built to get upfield to try to create negative plays or rush the passer. Offenses know exactly how to punish their aggressiveness with toss and trap plays. The Packers and Lions ran toss-crack plays at them relentlessly. The Chiefs had success running toss plays against the 49ers in their 2022 regular-season matchup and this season, against the Jets, who run the same style of defense with head coach Robert Saleh, the former 49ers defensive coordinator. The 49ers undoubtedly will work on containing the ball against the run in practice but it’ll be difficult to change how they’ve played philosophically since Kyle Shanahan was hired. Also, becoming more passive on early downs will leave them susceptible against the pass but based on how they’ve been gashed in the playoffs, I don’t think they have a choice. |
