Betsy Arakawa, whose body was found on the floor of a bathroom in the couple’s home, likely died before her husband, said Dr. Heather Jarrell, chief medical investigator for the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.

Arakawa was last observed alive on February 11, when she was captured on surveillance cameras visiting a local CVS pharmacy and dog food store before returning to her gated community, Santa Fe Sheriff Adam Mendoza said. February 11 is also the last day Arakawa had email communications.

Her husband, Gene Hackman, probably died on February 18, when his pacemaker last recorded his heartbeat, according to Jarrell.

“Based on the circumstances, it is reasonable to conclude that Ms. Arakawa passed away first,” Jarrell told reporters.

They are saying the wife died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome that is caught from rodent droppings and urine?

So she died and was dead for a week before he died. Did he not realize it due to his Alzheimer's? Or just not know what to do?

Weird
This makes a ton more sense IMO she was probably doing so much of his caretaking because he was not able and when she passed there was not much hope for him. Sad story.

They just revealed that Gene Hackman had Alzheimer’s, so it’s very possible that he didn’t remember who his wife even was when she was dead, or that she was there.

Really sad

Yeah, once they determined was not CO, I think it was a safe assumption she died and he was immobile to the point he didn't know.

That seems weird to me. She was dead in the bathroom for a week and he didn't notice? Maybe if there's Alzheimer's I could see it, but I hadn't read that, and it would seem odd that she was still caring for him alone if it was that bad.

I imagine the Alzheimer's plus the various challenges of being at his advanced age...in that condition he was probably in a pretty bad place without her. Lots of gaps and reasonable questions but this makes the most sense of anything since I learned it wasn't CO related.

That shit can reduce a person to the mental capacity of a baby. It's horrible.

Even so, wasting away without any care for a week until he finally died.... Jesus. I don't even want to think about it.

Yeah man this still doesn't smell quite right

Still hung up on the fact that the handymans original call said he was locked out, but the cops found the front door open on arrival

And now the official theory is that she died first, and he just wandered around the place for a week without ever having a single lucid moment with his supposed oldtimers, and noticing that his wife needed help?

Seems like a rush job to close it up quickly

Hackman used to own a historic building here in Golden. It is called the Armory. I saw him out walking around downtown a couple of times many many years ago. My oldest daughter had to convince me it was him the first time. He was taller than I had imagined. He ended up selling or giving the building to a non profit I think. With all the rough edges he showed in his work it seems like he was a decent guy in real life. I was bummed to see he had passed.

Dude was 95 years old with advanced heart disease and Alzheimer's. There's a good chance he had no idea where he was or what was going on. It's a pretty large bad faith leap to think it's more likely that there is something nefarious going on. Occam's Razor in action.

My only question is if his wife died of Hantavirus why she didn't seek medical help for it. She had to have awful symptoms leading up to her death. I definitely could see Gene not recognizing what was going on at 95 with Alzheimer's.

I like the phrase 'smell test' because I get the literal visual of someone sniffing from a thousand miles away and saying, 'hmm, that's not right.

Dead bodies in a house for week or better, I imagine it wouldn’t smell right.
