With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

So, just to get back to an obvious question that was asked earlier: Why did Yuni start today?

DM has done wonders for our minor league system, but seemingly none of that has transcribed to the majors, obviously not on the win/loss front. At the end of the day that's all that matters, and he should be held accountable for it (even though you and I know he won't be).

Yeah, that load of WTF is beyond my ability to reason. I need Duncan Idaho level of baseball smarts to even contemplate trying to defend that, which in this case I'm kinda glad to say I'm nowhere near. It just feels "right" to be pissed about it without trying to think of a justifiable reason as to why they did it.

DM is a dumb mother****er equipped with a solid draft budget and high-round picks.

Let's provide one rabbit he's pulled out of his magic drafting hat. Lincecum? Nope. Sale? Nope. And let's not say Myers in the third because he was an obvious first-round talent who slipped b/c of signability.

Anyone with a subscription to Baseball Prospectus could equal DM's drafting record.

What he can do well? Assemble a pen. Period. Nothing else.

Abreu is just getting called up to fill the spot on the 40 man roster since he wasn't on it already. Nothing more, nothing less. They will ship his ass back down in a little bit.

First: Thank you.

Second: There is no defending starting Yuni Betancourt today, other than "he's righthanded" and they were trying to position themselves vs. the lefthanded starter. Never mind that Yuni has actually been worse vs. lefties than righties this year.

I would guess that something happened today that was a final straw (maybe it was him not hustling as another groundball rolled slowly by him into the outfield at a key point in a rally).

Regarding calling up Abreu rather than Gio... the problem is that Getz, like Gio, can only play 2B. If they called up Gio, Mike Moustakas becomes your best backup option at SS. So I don't complain about calling up Abreu (who has been playing a lot of SS at Omaha and is better there than Falu).

This would be monumentally stupid if it's the case... but we are talking about the Royals here. Do you guys thinks it's possible that Yost didn't even know before the game that Yuni was going to be DFA'd and therefor started him just to rest Moose? I can see that kind of lack of communication happening. Or if it is the case then maybe DM didn't tell him on purpose so he wouldn't have to worry about managing a lame duck player for another game.

Then there's always the chance that the move wasn't even decided on until during or after the game.

Just a thought.

I'm fine with using and abusing Yuni at the team's discretion since we're paying him an unsightly sum for his terrible play.

But..."if it's all about winning," and you knowingly start a player you believe is contradictory to the previous statement, you've basically shown the rest of the team that you didn't give a **** about winning on that given day.

NOW it's all about winning. And since winning is what we're all about now--

I didn't think Mijares even got paid that much. Salary under $1M/yr. I don't understand this team at all.
