Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

I still think burning Lawrence to the ground should be an annual event.

I'd like to see the "cats, jayhawks, and tigers all end up in the same conference. I'd like to see the clones as well, but tcu may have stolen their spot. There's a lot to be said for keeping old regional rivalries intact, especially if you're going to be playing a lot of games on the east coast.

If the Okies split west, I hope we don't dawdle around and take up the Big East should they offer us a spot. I think it would stabilize their conference as well, and get us all away from the money grubbing, duplicitous texas schools.

Texas is going to have a tough time getting a conference to accept them if they don't drop their personal network. Conferences want to have shared revenue. From what I hear the network isn't even taking off as it is only shown in one small market. It was a short sighted deal on all sides.

It was a poor job by the Big XII commissioner having a conference network fall through because they couldn't keep Texas on board. Nobody is going to sign a contract to show everyone's games but Texas. It can't be a one team conference with only money going into one schools coffers even if they are the big kid on the block.

I'm not sure I can like a picture more than I like this one:

It really does capture the smugness while also demonstrating the complete lack of awareness that is Dan Beebe.

Whatever - just give me a healthy conference and let my football program continue to develop. This program has become a legitimately strong program and I desperately want that to continue.
The conference would lose quite a bit in the football department if WVU leaves, IMO.

Through all of this, I find myself being more aligned with MU and KSU than ever before. Almost like kindred spirits or something... and I find myself REALLY ****ING HATING TEXAS.

I, for one, would love to see our natural rivalries play out in the new/next conference.
