Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

If Orangeblood report is accurate and Texas won't give up LHN but OU and OSU elect to stay in the PAC, that will put KU-MU on the spot, assuming the PAC still wants to go to 16. So, if the PAC comes to MU and says, we'll make you a regional network with KU, you'll earn around 20 million a year, and in four years you'll make between 30 and 40 million, do you say yes?

There are two reasons why I want KU in the Pac 12. The first is that if KU goes to the Big East we'd be jumping out of an unstable conference into another unstable conference. A couple of schools are already looking to bail on the Big East right now for the ACC. If KU went to the Pac it would end up in a stable conference that isn't fighting another conference to stay alive like the Big East and ACC will be doing very soon. Jumping to the Big East is just a stop gap until those two leagues fight it out and decide which teams will make it into that new merged 16 team league.

The other reason is selfish. I live on the west coast and would love to see the Jayhawks come out here to Seattle every couple years so I can watch them play the Huskies, Ducks, or Cougars.

I don't really think KU is going to get a Pac 10 invite, but if they do they have to take it the second that its offered and not look back IMO.

Most of the games for the central time zone teams wouldn't start then. One of the main points the PAC wants to grab 4 big XII schools was to have a presence in those time zones. They're not going to get those time slots and then convert them to west coast time.

Perhaps the games between those schools, or home games, but what about games @USC, @UCLA, @UW..etc? Those will get priority.
