Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

It wasn't that long ago you could get into KU by simply graduating high school from the state of Kansas.

I am sure the Big 10 is falling over themselves to get that university into their conference.

{Takes a look around to see if MU is still ****ed}

Yup, still looking that way.

There's a very real chance that the SEC grabs VaTech, the Pac12 snipes the 'south' schools and the B1G decides not to expand.

Given that leadership exhibited by the powers involved to this point, that's exactly what I expect to happen. How fitting is it that Brady Deaton was the chair of the "expansion" committee when the B12 was systematically dismantled by his opposition?

What a worthless worthless administration this University has.

Im a KU fan , and as much as I hate MU, and would love to see them in the MAC ...no way do I not see one of the big conferences taking MU. MU has more TV households then KU , and that's what matters. As much as would like to think that KU`s basketball legacy would make KU more attractive then MU, MU has the STL and KC market..that trumps basketball. MU is in a better position to land where it wants, rather then who will take them . I don't see the Big 10 , or Pac 12 wanting KU. KU would be a better fit in the Big East any way , to form a Basketball mega conference....KSU better hope they get to come along for the ride with KU , or they will have to run smack with Buffalo fan

While I'm not waving the white flag now, he does make a good point. Tell me you are comfortable that Deaton and Alden are people that you can place your trust in to guide the school thru this possible fallout.

I agree that we should be saying, "screw this conference" and be out making our own path. I like the fact that a normally quiet Pinkel chided Beebe the other day.

My other concern about MU....the academic block. For some reason the academic pull at MU (Columbia) seems to almost snub it's nose at athletics sometimes, almost as if to say "we really run this place".

The CIC angle has me more convinced than ever that the B1G is not expanding. That's a huge reduction in institution funds that football expansion cannot make up. Assuming its an equal 13 way split, that 460 million dollars per institution in research funds per year. If the B1G expands to 16, that split goes down roughly 100 million dollars per school.

There are no football contracts that are going to make up that amount of money for the B1G institutions. I'm sure the B1G is a little gun shy anyway since NU went and lost its AAU standing after they joined. That means the SEC is the only viable option Missouri has unless the SEC decides to go to 16. And they would have to have assurances from CBS/ESPN they are willing to expand the contract by 17 million per school per year.

Perhaps there's some bigger payoff somewhere that I'm just not getting, but I cannot for the life of me see how these expansion scenarios really benefit anyone outside of the PAC structure (which is genius by the way. I am very envious of it.) Missouri, you have competition and fewer options than you may think at this point. I wouldn't be too cocky just yet.

It's going to be funny when we spend a year bickering over this, and in the end the 5 Big 12 teams left will decide to pull in BYU, raid Conference USA, and keep on going.

If there is ONE THING, and only ONE THING, to be learned from this endless abortion of a thread, it is that none of us know what the assholes in control of this are going to do.

Do you know what I predict? That Missouri's future will be determined by people who don't value my counsel, give a shit about my opinion, or care if I live or die. And you and everybody else here falls into that category as well.

So shut up.
