Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

They could go independent for BBall ala ND, and then join whatever conference they want for FB. Actually, its not quite that simple. Once conference season rolls around, finding teams to play would be extremely tough. KU needs to be a part of a large conference or soon the big time coaches and players will stop coming here.

Let me get this straight. Your "best guess" is that a conference wants to add a school 2 time zones away located in a state with fewer than 3 million residents and one of the worst football programs of any BCS conference team, but they don't want Texas? Sounds right to me.

The PAC-12 won't allow the Texas TV network and it's too valuable for Texas to give it up.

The PAC won't turn down anything Scott suggests is the most prudent course for them. This conference, when adding their regional network money to the TV deal stands to be making between 30 and 40 million dollars a year per school in 4-5 years. I thought it was cute, though, how OU and OSU were exploring all options including keeping the Big XII together and Texas was proclaiming they want to save the conference. They're just looking at those numbers and jackin' each other off right now.

So, why didn't Texas jump to the PAC last year? They make more money not being part of that conference.

Supposing that's true, what does Kansas bring to the table? The entire population of the state of Kansas is almost identical to the Saint Louis metro area. I don't see the PAC deciding to grab a school two time zones east when the school has no football team, and the state has no television sets.
