Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Big 12 Expansion: Notre Dame Looks To Be Staying Independent

With the announcement from Texas A&M that they intend to leave the Big 12, the conference is pursuing new schools. One such school that’s been rumored as a potential candidate is Notre Dame. However, the Irish enjoy remaining independent and from all indications, don’t appear to be changing their minds anytime soon:

It has been speculated that the Big 12 would look to Notre Dame as its replacement for Texas A&M should the Aggies, as expected, leave the conference.

But even though Irish athletic director Jack Swarbrick is friends with Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds, that doesn’t mean his school ready to give up football independence.

“Our priority — and our clear priority — is maintaining our football independence and continuing to build our relationship with the Big East with our other sports,” Swarbrick told the Austin American-Statesman.

If Notre Dame ever changed their stance, Pitt could give any invite more serious consideration. But until then, the conference remains incredibly unstable and it’s unlikely that Pitt would give a move without other teams being added any serious consideration.

I'd like to think of myself as a Big 12 homer, but PITT & ND?? Come on man. I believe BYU would accept if we could get 2 other teams to come along, but you have to think along the lines of teams like UNLV, Southern Florida, Memphis, TCU, Houston (sadly), New Mexico, Boise State (if you don't care about academics).

Call me crazy but I like BYU, Southern Florida, and UNLV. All four time zones

Only way I see Pitt coming is if they could convince WVU and UL to come with.
