Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Missouri has strong regional ties to the Big 12 and rivalries that would die, but money and exposure are the currency in today's game. And that's what the SEC has in spades.

Follow @sbnkansascity on Twitter, and Like SB Nation Kansas City on Facebook.

Aug 29, 2011 - The Southeastern Conference is likely to raid the Big 12 for its next candidate for expansion. That much seems certain since Texas A&M filed its papers to move late last week, and the move has been publicly telegraphed and analyzed for weeks by mainstream media. But with the expansion to 13 teams for the power conference, will the SEC possibly look for a 14th member to keep things even? And if so, will they be interested in another Big 12 member like the Missouri Tigers to bolster the conference?

Certainly for Missouri, the allure of the SEC would provide multiple benefits. The suspicious cloud that now hangs over the basketball program after several fruitful years under now-Arkansas coach Mike Anderson thanks for Miami hire Frank Haith could disappear with the strengthened conference ties. Even if they must go through the hoops of dispelling allegations or ultimately firing Haith, the buzz that would come from the move could bolster the team's recruiting base and media coverage.

The biggest gain, however, would come from the football side of things, where the Tigers would undoubtedly play tougher competition but would be able to compete at the highest of collegiate levels. They'd also be able to recruit players with the lure of playing multiple nationally televised games each week. While the Big 12 certainly has powerful media members like Oklahoma and Texas among others, it cannot rival the SEC or even come close at this point.

Simply put, the gravitational pull of the SEC is nearly impossible to resist at this stage, so the assumption is that if the conference is interested in a team -- Mizzou, Virginia Tech, others -- then that team will nod in agreement. Missouri has strong regional ties to the Big 12 and rivalries that would die, but money and exposure are the currency in today's game. And that's what the SEC has in spades.

After the "MU to B10" debacle I wouldn't blame Mizzou if they played the "Missouri to SEC" talk down unless/until it was a sure thing.

As a lifelong Missouri fan I am absolutely conditioned to believe that anything good that could possibly happen to this program...won't.

There is no way, absolutely no way at all, that MU ends up in the SEC. They'll end up hemming and hawing and they'll end up going down with the ship in the B12 due to lack of competent leadership.

And when the music stops, we'll end up in some mediocre conference and the college sports universe will wonder how the hell it happened.

As a Mizzou fan, I'll know the answer: We're the University of Missouri - that's just how it works 'round here.

I hope MU doesn't go SEC, I'd like to see them come to B10 if we need another team. Why the hell would you want to align with the southern teams?

I'd rather go to the B1G as well - we'd actually win stuff there.

But you can't risk ending up without a chair when the dust settles. Unless the B1G comes calling today, they'd need to take an offer from the SEC the moment it's made.

But like I said - they won't.

Might as well buy my 2014 Conference USA Champions shirt now.

Considering the amount of disrespect heaped upon us last year, under no circumstance do I want us to go to the Big 10 now. No way should we allow ourselves to be the "team to be named later" after that assbag Delany spurned us for the wastelanders.

In all honesty, I think Missouri is by far the safest school among the remaining members of what used to be the B12 North.

Board of Directors Chairman and University of Missouri Chancellor Brady Deaton: "The chancellors and presidents of the Big 12 are committed to keeping our conference competitively and academically strong. We have a process in place that enables us to move aggressively regarding the possible expansion of the conference and to assure our members and student-athletes that we will take advantage of the most productive opportunities in the best interests of all."

Commissioner Dan Beebe: "Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin has notified the Conference of his decision to withdraw the university from the Big 12 effective June 30, 2012. The presidents and chancellors of the nine remaining member institutions are steadfast in their commitment to the Big 12. As previously stated, the Conference will move forward aggressively exploring its membership options."

So based on your CoMo-like track record, Mizzou is leaving the Big 12.

i don't know what's going to happen to KU.

If the Big 12 does implode i think KU will be lucky to end up in the Big East.
