Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

Thats true, but if I'm the Pac 10 I'd take Kansas. Its a stronger brand, brings in more revenue, and heck, you can add Utah any time. Because of its location the eastern conferences will never make a play for it. If expansion goes beyond 16 teams in the future, then is when I'd make my play for Utah if I'm the Pac 10.

A quick glance at the Provo-Orem area shows a population of 500k+.

One thing you need to take into account is:

Population of Utah in 1990: 1.7 million
Population of Utah now: 2.7 million

Population of Kansas in 1990: 2.5 million
Population of Kansas now: 2.8 million

It would be a tough decision for the Pac-10 still though, because Kansas does make more money than Utah right now and carries a traditional powerhouse in basketball. Actually, I changed my mind. Either way they go, it's a good choice. I'm obviously biased for Kansas though.

Why doesn't the Big 12 just try to make it a 16 team conference and poach the good Big East schools why they can. I'd do that, if that fails. Then consider other options. And when I mean Big 12, I mean Texas.

What is wrong w/ trying to do this?

Kansas
K-State
Iowa State
Missouri
West Virginia
Louisville
Syracuse
Cincinnati
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
UConn
Pittsburgh
Texas
Texas A&M
Baylor
Texas Tech

I know the geography doesn't make much sense, but that is one hell of a conference right there. Try it, see what happens. It can't hurt. Let the Big 10 have Rutgers and Notre Dame would pretty much be forced to join the Big 10. It would be nice is the Big 12 could kick out Baylor & ISU and then make a play for South Florida/Utah/Memphis. That conference right there would bring in good money and the Pac-10 would be sitting there w/ their limp dick in their hand. If it wasn't for the fucking Big 10.

Zero value staying with KSU, a second/third tier school that has latched onto KU for too long now and brings nothing to the table academically or athletically. I'd like to see KU get a Pac 16 invite, get away from MU and KSU and reset.

For the record, as a KU BASKETBALL fan. Pac-10 is the least attractive option out of anything but the MWC merger.

The only downside I see with the Pac 10 is travel.

In BWill's case it's "As opposed to all those IOWA FOOTBALL fans who really don't care about KU football.
