Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

The D will be fine, I'm more worried about the offense.

Dude you guys should just have two coaches. Make Pelini your d coord, and bring back Callahan to run the offense. You guys were putting up points galore, just couldn't stop anybody. Now you can't score, and get beat by Iowa State when they can't even score a touchdown.

Oh yeah, KU beat UCLA by like 40 in the Aloha Bowl.

We've had some great seasons.

It's nice having a rich tradition in both major sports. Makes the falls and the winters fly on by.

I personally can't wait to find out where KU lands. SEC, Big East, etc... I only hope that KSU, MU and ISU are along for the ride. I'd like to keep the traditions going strong!

WTF? Now you're being absurd, I don't recall KU making a road trip to Washington or playing Texas that year.

Kansas has a rich tradition in football? ...come on now. I honestly thought Kansas was an intramural program until a few years ago.

I can't help it. I grew up in Iowa near the boarder of Iowa & Nebraska. I grew up hating Nebraska fans. Especially the ones that lived in Iowa, and liked Nebraska.

Watson is the same OC from the Callahan days. You gotta take this into account Lee had only thrown two passes before last year and was injured most the year. Helu was hurt most the year and the SR Wr's were benched. That offense was relying on two freshmen RB's and Niles Paul.

Really? KU destroyed UCLA in 95, and won a BCS Bowl about 10 years later.

You've got a strange definition of "intramural".

KU is traditionally one of the worse teams in BCS football. Sure they have had some better success in recent years. But year and and year out, we suck ass.

Your definition of tradition must be different than mine. I like you, your a KU homer, but I don't think you'll find more than a handful of KU fans who think KU has a good football tradition.

KU is 77th in winning % per division one teams all-time. They haven't won a conference championship since 1968. That isn't very good.

I think instead of squaring off with our respective "new" conferences we should all be unified in the fact that this really blows. The big 12 is dead. That sucks.
