Big 10 Report: Conference Realignment

A source in St. Louis familiar with the situation told NewsCenter 16 Thursday afternoon that Missouri will leave the Big XII and soon join the Big 10. Other schools expected to follow the Tigers are Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and Nebraska.

Many have speculated that such an expansion would include Notre Dame but ND athletic director Jack Swarbrick told me today that the Irish prefer to stay independent in football and in the Big East for other sports. Swarbrick said maintaining football Independence is such a part of what Notre Dame is.

He went on to say the Big East is a great partner for the University in other sports.

"We do have to monitor what is going on," Swarbrick said. "There will be significant shifts. "Hopefully we can navigate them by keeping our football independent and keeping our Big East affiliation because that is what we care about."

The move of Syracuse, Pitt and Rutgers to the Big Ten from the Big East could categorically change the landscape of the Big East itself. Thus, what Swarbrick is referring to when stating the University must continue to monitor what is going on.

The interview with Swarbrick was done before the late afternoon announcement.

You could have at least made up something that was remotely possible.

5. Pac-10
6. creating a new BCS conference of some kind
Obviously I'll take what I can get, but I would rather be in the Big 10 than any other conference. Good academics unlike SEC where you can be a rahtard and get in. I'd vote my vote for conferences as follows...

1. Big 10
2. SEC (football money)
3. Big East (probably the best for basketball)
4. Pac-10
5. ACC

Other than the big 10 and SEC...if KU, KSU, ISU, MISSOURI could somehow poach Cincinnati, W Virginia, Memphis, Louisville, and a few other schools that would be a the ultimate scenario. I'm sure as one of the large ranking football revenue schools in the Big East, they get sick of having to be in the same conference as some of those other schmucks. If football is driving it, why not just make a new conference w/ those teams. You think Marquette, Providence, Villanova, Seton Hall, & St Johns have pull in that conference? I would think the football schools the Big 10 doesn't poach would love to move. Create a new conference that would be decent at football, and good at basketball. I don't really see KU to the ACC is a viable option at all

The Mnt West/WAC is not an option unless you fill it w/ some other Big East/ACC teams and only have to use a couple like Utah, BYU, Boise State etc.

I'm not sure, but the KU football program is what is holding them back. Basketball is not that big of a deal to those conferences. I think Iowa State is in the worst situation, they might just end up in the MVC.

I paid attention to the ACC/Big East realignment a few years back and I don't live in the area. Buck is a pup though, he may have been in grade school when the Big XII was formed and probably didn't care.
